Name the mystery (to me) seedlings! :-)
So it seems last autumn's compost was not as sterilised as I'd have liked, which isn't a surprise given the temperatures didn't get high enough for long enough . . .
This is the crop of seedlings removed from the vege bed this morning; I know they're coming from the compost as I saw a couple of others like this when unloading it from the winter storage bin.
I'm curious as to what these are. The leaves are quite thick, and make me think of brassicas (admittedly having never grown any). Any advance on that from (much) more experienced eyes than mine?

If seedlings are coming up in your compost, they have to be from something that either had seeds in it, or went to seed. That pretty much eliminates brassicas, and other "greens". Tomatoes are famous for coming up from seed in compost, but those are not tomatoes. Those look like a squash seeding, another plant famous for coming up in compost.

Ah! That all makes perfect sense, they would be the results of my autumn pumpkin eating. Thanks, OG

I was kind of leaning toward Cucumbers. Thats what came up in one of my beds this summer. I let it grow and had fall cucumbers.KiwiSFGnewbie wrote:Ah! That all makes perfect sense, they would be the results of my autumn pumpkin eating. Thanks, OG

Mystery Seedlings
For two years running, I've had volunteer cantaloupes grow from compost.

seedling
That's definitely a Pumpkin seedling. Bigger than a Zuke seedling and much bigger than a Cuke seedling.
