What to Plant Next?
[ltr]Hi all! I'm looking for some ideas as to what to plant in 4 open squares at this time of year in zone 5a in Canada. All of the squares are on the east side of one of my raised beds and I don't have the ability to trellis at that point. To the west of 3 of them is corn with lettuce to the west of the 4th square.[/ltr]
[ltr]This is my first year doing any gardening so any advice would be appreciated, even if it is to amend them and leave them fallow.[/ltr]
[ltr]Thanks![/ltr]

In order for good suggestions on what you can plant in the open spaces at this time of the year, it would help if you can provide suggestions on what vegetables you like to eat and what you need to balance your harvests and diet. No point in planting something just because you can if you don't like to eat it.

Re: What to Plant Next?
I'll eat anything. I may plant some bush beans, radishes, and some more carrots. Do you think we're too far into summer to plant bok choy? I've read it likes cooler weather.OhioGardener wrote:In order for good suggestions on what you can plant in the open spaces at this time of the year, it would help if you can provide suggestions on what vegetables you like to eat and what you need to balance your harvests and diet. Thanks for any other suggestions.

Re: What to Plant Next?
It is not too late for Bok Choy or Chinese Cabbage as they are cool weather crops, and they are frost tolerant. Bush Beans is probably pushing the envelope - it takes about 60 - 70 days from germination to start producing fruit, which would put that around the end of September or early October. That is getting very close to first frost. Radishes planted during hot weather will quickly bolt to seed. A good group of plants for the fall are the cool weather greens, such as spinach, Swiss chard, arugula, etc.. Beets and Carrots are also good choices since they continue to grow very well long after the first frost. Also, Sugar Snap Peas are a fall crop.
Lots of choices. Plant what you like to grow and eat.

Re: What to Plant Next?
So, good question—I am in Ohio, northwest.
When should I start my radishes? Also, I would like to trellis (I have room) sugar snaps….timing is tough! I also want to put in turnips (Tokyo Cross, Hakurai type).
Any input is welcome!
