What to plant NOW? Empty What to plant NOW?

Post  ralitaco 6/22/2010, 7:33 pm

Ok, so I have virtually nothing left in my garden due to bugs and lack of watering on my part. As a result, I have plenty of empty squares.

1. I would like to know what I can plant this time of year.
So far it looks like I can do cabbage and broccoli and cauliflower, but I don't know if there is enough time to start from seeds.

2. I guess I need to know when my first frost date is, and I haven't figured that out yet.
my zip is 28443.

3. what seed catalogs do you suggest?

Thanks,
Jim

Check out this site for frost dates. It's helped me figure that out. I'm not so sure that planting those crops right now would do you good (if you had the seedlings/transplants), there are some summer loving of those but they are mostly cooler weather crops. You still have time to plant some beans, peppers, and tomatoes if you can find a place that has them established enough (I found an Ingles that had some really nice looking ones). I'm starting some new bean seedlings (bush) to replace my current bush beans that are on their last go round.

Don't give up on the summer crops, Monday was the first day of summer, you've still got at least two good months of warm weather to try for!

Here's a good starting point for NC Fall planting:
http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/hil/hil-8001.html

Also, once you figure out your fall frost date, check out the planting charts in the back of Mel's "All New Square Foot Gardening" book. I consider it my "go to" reference.

As for seed catalogs, there was a thread about this a few weeks ago. Here's the link:
https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/general-sfg-talk-f5/who-do-you-buy-seeds-from-t2775.htm#20252

You can also use the forum's search feature to find more.

What to plant NOW? Empty Re: What to plant NOW?

I don't know in NC, but here in N Central Texas the answer is "nothing". Temps are hitting 100 each day and keeping the plants alive is a real challenge, and nothing is setting fruit since it's so hot. Here in zone 8A we seed most cool weather crops the first couple of weeks of August, and fast growing "summer" veggies around the first of September. That way when the weather cools off they will begin producing again.

I second Radishes.

I don't love to eat radishes, but I am learning to cook them in ways that I can tolerate, because I LOVE to grow radishes. They grow so fast! They're my new favorite vegetable.
I just went out and bought a bunch of different radish seed varieties, and I planted a few more squares of them a couple days ago. I love how they sprout after only 2 days!

I love how fast they sprout, too! Very Happy

What sort of recipes have you found so far? I haven't done anything fancy, just sauteed the radishes and their greens with some garlic, etc.

What to plant NOW? Empty Radish recipes

Post  Weed 'em and Reap 6/29/2010, 2:31 pm

So far, all I've done is sauteed them, too, but I have been collecting other recipes to try out when I have more radishes that are ready all at once. Here are 3 websites I found with radish recipes that I plan to try:

Wow, thanks! I have to admit I am sorely tempted to try a bunch of different varieties. I bought white hailstones because they were well recommended by the grower, plus hubby has an aversion to beets and I was trying to find something that wasn't red. Smile
