Re-starting my passion
Hi All,
It's been quite a while since I last posted - and haven't had the heart to garden after losing my dad in Spring 2018 other than some herbs last year and some Sun Gold tomatoes given to me by a neighbor and planted in a pot. But now I am ready to get back and start things up again. I have the below pictured beds my DH made me - out of cedar - a few years ago. They were originally meant for strawberries - but they did not do well after the first year. The 3 square portions are 2'x2' and the border bed is 1' wide. I plan on planting blue lake bush beans around the exterior as I have had success with those before in that specific spot. My question is, do you guys think I can do one plum tomato plant in the center of each of the 3 squares? I know the bushier tomatoes require more space, but cannot seem to locate my SFG book. I am also hoping to plant basil and parsley in the same bed as the tomatoes. Maybe 2 herbs per square with the tomatoes. Any feedback would be helpful and greatly appreciated

Re: Re-starting my passion
Hello Kristin and welcome back! It looks like you have some good starting (re-starting) material.
Well the "good book" says that you can grow vine type tomatoes one per square foot but bush type need 9 square feet. So based on that your squares would have half the space they need. I would be tempted to try at least one ;-) I'm sure people with more experience will be along shortly to give you better advice.
Good luck!

Re: Re-starting my passion
Hi Kristin, Beautiful set-up there!
I would go ahead and plant the 2 "wing" beds that are 2'x2' with plum tomatoes. The "center" big bed can be something else you like. Or, just go ahead and plant the tomatoes in all 3 and be ready to prune if they get too bushy against each other. You will still end up with a harvest even with occasional pruning.
