how to begin a shade garden

We have an area along our driveway that has washed out over the years. It's down to the weed cloth. I don't know what it looked like previously. The ground under is our lovely PA clay. Very hard. It's about 20x15 feet with rocks and trees - totally shaded. We have our last name on a stone sign, and put a chair out there for the bus stop. I'd like to get it looking nice, but not sure where to start. I'm thinking I need to do it in sections as time and money allows. Do I build up like a SFG, or dig down? Can I did holes into the clay and then fill it with better soil when I plant? Does anyone have a good website I can use? I'm thinking fern, daffodil, lilly of valley, hosta,
