I have a summer squash growing very well that has a mutant double fruit, with likewise a mutant double flower that just bloomed, figured I'd share

Very interesting. Two more of mine had started blooming and another should start tomorrow. Total of four now with baby squash and zuke forming.

Re: Double summer squash flower
Hope not! They were Ferry-Morse organic seeds, which allegedly according to their packets/company states that it's seeds are Non-GMO. I bought them, and many of my other garden seeds before I knew about seed savers exchange or southern exposure or any of the similar heirloom/non-GMO/organic seed companies. A couple of my varieties are from those sources and all my future varieties will be from thereCapeCoddess wrote:Always hot, are they GMO seeds?

Pretty sure GMO seeds still aren't available to home gardeners. If you're buying GMO seeds, the company makes you sign agreements and "It's a violation of the EPA's requirements to provide any genetically engineered seed to non-commercial growers.": http://www.nola.com/homegarden/index.ssf/2014/09/what_every_home_vegetable_gard.html

Just for CapeCoddess:
Another mutant squash! This one has a vine embedded on its back and was sprouting its brethren from its head.

Re: Double summer squash flower
Nope, this is a different one. Like a couple of my other fruits the double but the dust when I noticed the flower end looking like it was rotting/going bad or something. figured it was too good to be true . Strangely enough I have another fruit that looks like the above (with a stem embedded down the length of the fruit) as well, maybe it's just a common trait on summer squash?

I am not worried at all about that. It is just what happened. Mutation, or formation....not sure. But I would be stir frying that baby!

Twinsburg? Just kidding, that is kinda strange. I don't think I have ever seen that before, honestly. Can you ask your Extension Agent?

You can't really tell from the picture but looking closely it appears that the two flower stalks are "siamesed" together. It's as big as a leaf stalk but you can tell there are two of them. I'd have to find an agent to ask. Wish they were female, it would be interesting if they both developed.

Right...that would be interesting! I would try to email that picture to my Extension office....or Master Gardeners Club.RC3291 wrote:You can't really tell from the picture but looking closely it appears that the two flower stalks are "siamesed" together. Re: Double summer squash flower
Update on my squash. It's still growing but was afflicted with powdery mildew pretty bad, even though I have been spraying. I also trained it up a fence post! Until I ignored it to complete this project pictured below, now its drooping beyond the point of no return, so I'll have to let it run (if it doesn't die!). No more double fruits btw.

Re: Double summer squash flower
Very clean, pleasing garden area you have made. I hope the summer squash survives. I tried twice to trellis summer squash but I think it really needs the canopy of its leaves, especially in hot weather. Did you spray with a milk solution for the powdery mildew?
