ok I am a newbie, I thought I had done my homework on the book but I went in gung ho and started mixing my mel's mix. However! I miscalculated and got my mix way outta wack.  I am planning on having 4 eventually but now what I have is out of proportions,  I just need to know how much more of what to put to get it right for however many gardens I need to do I will. lol

What I have now:
3 sq foot of compost
2 square feet of Vermiculite
8 square feet of peat moss

please, tell me what I need to do. Hubby is almost finished his part so now I will need to put my mix in next!!! Just so confusing!

Have you already started mixing? if so the easiest solution would be to make the compost and the vermiculite equal to the peat moss. So the would be 5 more square feet of compost and 6 more square feet of vermiculite. This is how I would fix it if already mixed if not mixed yet just mix 2 square feet of the three ingredients and top off with the left over compost. Just my thoughts.

Do you mean square feet, or cubic feet?

One-third each of coarse vermiculite, FLUFFED peat moss, and a mixture of five different composts is what you're after.

A helpful measure is to use 5-gallon buckets, each of which holds 2/3 of a cubic foot.  In other words, three five-gallon buckets = two cubic feet.

Hi BBJean, Welcome to the Forum from California! glad you\'re here

As you can see, we are here to help. But, we need some more information and/or clarification.

1. You mention both Cubic feet and square feet. How many cubic feet of each material do you have?
2. How big is the box you need to fill right now?
3. Is everything mixed together? Or, are they sitting in 3 different piles or piles of bags.
4. Did you fluff the peat moss? It has to be fluffed before measuring. It almost doubles in size when fluffed!

If everything is mixed together and you fluffed the peat moss before measuring, you will need to add 5 more cubic feet of mixed compost and 6 more cubic feet of vermiculite to the pile. = 24 cubic feet which will fill three 4' x 4' beds 6" deep.

or . . .

If everything is mixed and you DID NOT fluff the peat moss before measuring, you will need to add 13 more cubic feet of mixed varieties of compost and 14 more feet of vermiculite. = 48 cubic feet which will fill six 4' x 4' beds.

So, as you can see, the more info we have, the better to help you.
