2017 SFG in Brooks, Ga

Well we got some snow this morning only a couple of inches.  My daughter took these pictures.  It is too cold for me to go outside.  I hope my broccoli is not frozen.  Although we had snow I don't think the temp went down below 30*F so maybe the broccoli will be okay.

And my grandson built a snow man..  Look at my grandsons attire.  High top tennis shoes, long underwear with shorts on top - Dixie snow garb.

I panicked and went out just before dark and harvested about 6 heads of Broccoli.  I have heard that they can take a freeze but I am not sure how hard a freeze they can handle.  Can some of you northerners help me out.  I had about 15 heads but only harvested 6 due to darkness.  It will be below freezing for about 10 hours.  The lowest temp is 26*F.  They are not covered with anything other than the tulle.  I know the plants themselves will survive but what about the heads freezing then thawing.??????????????

Not sure about them temps and broccoli, but hose heads look really good.

I don't know either, but those are beautiful.

I've never been able to grow broccoli so can't help you there. Will you be canning these, or freezing them?

My experience is that the heads are not as frost hardy as the plants, but they do not seem to need much protection, maybe tulle was enough? The frosted heads wilt, but taste fine. They should be processed/used quickly but not in a panic like with summer squash that quickly turns to moosh.

Well these eventually were thrown in the trash.  Everyone in my household came down with some virus or bacteria but not all of us had the same thing.  The worse hit was my 4 month old grandson.  They had to rush him by ambulance to Eggleston Childrens Hospital.  He had RSV (similar to bronchitis in adults).  They had to insert a tube in his lungs and suck out the mucus.  Son in law had the flu.  The rest of us had bad colds etc.  So the heads sat forgotten in the refrigerator and eventually had to be thrown out.

To answer my question about heads of broccoli withstanding freezes - yes the unharvested broccoli stood up well to the longer than normal hard freeze.  I harvested another four heads tonight and we had them for Christmas Eve supper.


The variety name of the broccoli is "Lieutenant".  The heads stayed tightly beaded for a long time.  Don't know if it is the cold weather or the variety.  I found that we do not like broccoli that has been frozen previously so we have to eat these fresh.

Oh, dear... How is he doing?

It was a scary week but he is now back to normal and a happy little 5 month old guy.
