Hurricane Matthew
All you gardeners on the East Coast, stay safe. I'm hoping for the best and planning for the worst.
Depending on how much Matthew weakens coming up through Fla, GA, and SC I'm expecting to lose my greenhouses only plastic) and may lose my rubbermaid sheds. I bought augers and heavy duty cable to and I'm racheting them down the best I can. Thinking about getting tie down straps and wrapping around the sheds as well. The house has been fine for several cat 2 hurricanes but the sheds are new.
I have stocked water and pop top canned food. Still have to get charcoal for the grill if we are without power for several days.
If Matthew is forcast to come in at a cat 3 I'll probably head inland. I have some cousins about 40 miles away.

Re: Hurricane Matthew
I'm hoping my bay front condo in Miami is spared this time...we'll know tomorrow.
I don't think it's going to make it up to the Cape though as there may be a cold front that pushes is out to sea.
Got my fingers crossed...for all of us.

Mrs TD and I support a young girl in Haiti through Compassion Canada. A few years ago she was at the epicenter of the devastating earthquake. Now she is not far from the worst hit area caused by hurricane Matthew. We are praying that she is safe but we have to rely on Compassion to keep us informed.

My sister (who is currently sailing around the world) has a condo and a couple of rental properties in Melbourne, Fla. This is where the eye is supposed to hit. I hope she has something to come home to.

I'm sitting here, all dry and comfy, watching the newscasters broadcasting from Florida, leaning into the wind and rain. I can't believe 1-1.5 million people have relocated. That is a lot of people (plus pets) to shelter. My heart goes out to all of you and yours who are affected by Matthew.

So thankful!
Even though the storm prep was exhausting, we're SO thankful that we didn't get slammed! Others in Haiti, and up north aren't so fortunate. We only lost power for a second, with a little flicker here and there. I consider it as a practice run for next time. I've made notes on things we need to keep in mind, and things we could do better, and tips to remember about putting up our shutter that will make it go much more smoothly.
In addition to my hurricane preps, I had another challenge. I recently learned that tree trimming companies are glad to give the trees shreds away for free. And sure enough, that was the case, although this was a larger load than I anticipated, and the timing was bad with the hurricane coming. So, in addition to our storm preps, I had the goal of moving most of this pile to the garden area before the storm. I managed to get 90% of the pile moved, and my 8'x10' tarp easily covers what's left. It sure was a GREAT workout!
I'm hoping that this will be a big help in my fight with my nemesis; Root knot nematodes.
Anyway, our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been devastated by the storm.

Re: Hurricane Matthew
I once gave myself a dummy-run of one hour to see what I could get together without having done any preparation.
A very humbling experience with huge gaps. I have since made myself a bug-out-bag and know where my vital papers are etc. Every now and then I add an item or two such as a hand-cranked radio, protein bars and recently something called a body bag as exposure is one sure thing to kill you. One is supposed to be able to survive 40 below for a while and it weighs about one pound.
I feel it is about time I did a check on stuff I had, e.g. change the water in the bottles.

That's great news, dstack! How far are you from the ocean, if you don't mind me asking? My mom's place is just west of the turnpike and she's up here wondering how it is out there.

We're in Oakland Park, east of 95 and Andrews, and just south of Commercial. So we're only about 2 miles from the beach.CapeCoddess wrote:That's great news, dstack! 842 dead in Haiti from this hurricane and a subsequent outbreak of cholera. As well livestock and fields (food) have been destroyed. Those dear people have been hit too many times by natural disasters and corrupt politicians.trolleydriver wrote:Mrs TD and I support a young girl in Haiti through Compassion Canada. Re: Hurricane Matthew
I find it sad also that the topsoil has been stripped away in many places so there is no way they can grow food themselves. We all know how hard it is to refurbish land like that.
Meanwhile the USA is having its problems so perhaps cannot help Haitians as much as they would like.

Re: Hurricane Matthew
Dstack,
Good to hear you fared well, we did also up here in Stuart. No damage to the house, lost power all day yesterday. Unfortunately my Loquat tree broke off at the roots, garden beds are a mess but no real complaints. This could have been a lot worse, Matthew spared us his fury by staying far enough offshore. Been seeing updates from the Bahamas, Cuba & Haiti. They all took a bad hit from this storm.
You can see the relief in Baily's smile that it wasn't any worse.

Re: Hurricane Matthew
Thanks Craig. You got wacked much worse than us. How far from the beach are you? And how old was you Loquat tree? I had minor damage on trellised vines, but nothing compared to what I expected. Glad you and Bailey are OK.TCgardening wrote:Dstack,

Re: Hurricane Matthew
The Loquat was planted about 11-12 years ago. I bought it at a Master Gardeners plant sale. It must have been grown from seed as we waited 10 years for the first fruit. So now I get the chance to pick a better grafted variety tree. The intracoastal is at the end of my street 1/2 mile away so we are about 1 mile from the beach, the area is called Rocky Point on the map. The St Lucie inlet is on the far side of the neighborhood. The mango, lychee and even the frangipani trees came thru with no real damage. The coconut trees shed a few fronds but that is how they survive these storms so well.
The real difference from the 2004-5 storms, we stopped at the Publix grocery store yesterday, it was business as usual. Not so 11 years ago.

So far so good here near Surf City, NC.
Only a couple of power flickers so far and the satellite keeps cutting out.
Local news shows down trees and flooding in the area.
One of my neighbors posted these photos from the back of the 'hood:

TC, You need to post Bailey's photo under Garden Doggies! New, better Loquat tree - you know how to make lemonade out of lemons.
RT, Thanks for the comic relief!
