Mid-South in July: 2015
Good morning, everyone. It's that time again. What can we plant in the mid-south this month to keep our harvest going?
According to Gardenate.com, it's kind of a short list this month:
According to Weather.com, it's mostly going to be in the mid-90's for highs and lower 70's for lows until at least July 15.
Please plan on doing your gardening early and stay hydrated. You HAVE put mulch down, right?
I'm already thinking about fall gardening and what I can plant inside now to get a good harvest. How about you?
Does anyone have a list of other items you like to plant around this time?
Be safe! Have fun!!!

I will be planting a 4' x 8' bed of Pinkeye Purple Hull peas this weekend. Also another 4' x 8' bed of Silver Queen Corn, and maybe a couple of 2' x 2' beds of Edamame.

Marie, I absolutely LOVE your avatar. I copied it to my FB today because I wore a coat into work this morning, then we had tornado warnings (for the 2nd time EVER) and got almost 2 inches of rain in an hour, now there's not a cloud in the sky and it's warm out.

I love the minions! Found out that they even have their own Facebook page... So needless to say I've downloaded a bunch of their cartoons.
Re: Mid-South in July: 2015
This month, I've got pole beans to replace my bush beans that've stopped producing, and asian long beans to try, too. I also have a packet of nasturtium so I can encourage more good insects.
I just ordered more popcorn seeds to replace the corn destroyed by last night's storm. Amazon says it will arrive Saturday, so I'll get someone to help me put them in seedling cups so they can go into the ground when they're a few inches high.

I think you can just direct sow the corn at this time of the year. Hopefully, someone in your Region will speak up.

This weekend, I am planting my fourth planting of corn (this time in a 4 x 8 bed), my second planting of Pinkeye Purple Hull peas (4 x 8 bed), Edamame, and replanting my SVB destroyed zucchini.

Pickleworms are moving in right now, and when there are a lot of them, they can be as bad as the vine borers. I found the first piclewom of the season in some yellow squash last week. You may wish to grow your zukes under cover - or at least keep them protected by Bt, so the worms cannot bore in. Bats used to be pretty good control of the adult pickleworm moths, but with their loss, the pickleworms have exploded. They will eat not only the fruit, but the leaves and stems as well.

Yes, I get pickleworms every year. I actually have a parthenocarpic (sp) zucchini and cucumber. Unfortunately the cucumber is growing up a trellis so I can't cover it. But I planted a lot of cucumbers so hopefully there will be enough left for me. I will try the BT on the cucumbers. But this time I will cover the zucchini. And I have seen a lot of bats flying around in the early evening so maybe they have done their job. Hmm, maybe I should plant one of those cucumbers in the zucchini bed and let it run along the ground.

Yolos, you've reassured me on the zucchini. I only just planted mine in early July as well. It's coming up quite quickly. It's the variety from when we exchanged seeds. I can't remember the name, only that it is self-pollinating. I hope yours does well!yolos wrote:This weekend, I am planting my fourth planting of corn (this time in a 4 x 8 bed), my second planting of Pinkeye Purple Hull peas (4 x 8 bed), Edamame, and replanting my SVB destroyed zucchini.

Huh? There's no such thing as self pollinating zucchini! There is a new parthenocarpic variety out now - doesn't require pollination - but that is seedless, so you could not exchange seeds from it.

The zucchini is called Partenon. I gave all the fruits to my daughter and did not notice if there were any seeds.
Pollinator - Windmere purchased some seeds and mailed some to me. They were damaged in the mail so then I purchased some. Then I think I either mailed some back to Windmere or just delivered them in person. So we did not actually harvest the seeds from the plant but exchanged seeds purchased online.
