Lots of work this weekend fixing up the garden!  I planted peas last weekend, but put them on the wrong side of the bed, so I had to move them to the north side this weekend.  In addition, I planted some lettuce (bibb and romaine), some onion sets, and some carrots and scallions.

Lettuce, with peas behind the lettuce.  This box will also hold peppers once it's warm enough, and who knows what else, maybe a squash or vining cucumber.

Onion sets (sweet onions).  I'm playing with spacing here - Mel says 16 per square, but if I recall, the last time I tried the bulbs didn't grow very big.  In front of the onions is a square of carrots and one of scallions. This box will have tomatoes come May.

My successfully over-wintered shallots!  I experimented for the first time with over-wintering.  If these go well and grow big, I'll do several more squares next fall.  This box will definitely also be holding a squash/zucchini.

Herbs in pots - waiting to get the right size big clay pot and some rocks to put onto the little tipsy pot stand.  Herbs right by the house = more likely to use them! The rest of the garden is in the backyard behind my garage.

I will!  I want to put pebbles around and between the beds, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.  After that, and once things start really growing, I think it's going to be so pretty back there that I'm going to want to dig up more ground so I can put in a little patio!

moswell.....Its a good idea to have your herbs close to your kitchen door.  That way you can use them more often.
I had mine originally in my raised beds, out behind the house and up a hill, and I often forgot to clip a few for meals.
Now that I've changed that to the flower bed right outside my kitchen, I nip off a branch of tyme or rosemary or a bunch of parsley or basil and my meal is complete.

Looks great, Moswell!

I have most of my herbs on my deck for just that reason - ease of use.

Okay, today I managed to order plants online for all the peppers and tomatoes I want that I can't get at Home Depot.  In past years I went to the Rutgers Gardens Plant Sale member's pre-sale, but since I don't live in NJ anymore I didn't  want to pay for the membership.  And last year I tried going on a non-member day, and half the things I wanted were missing. Sad

So I have on the way Black Krim (grafted), Moreton, Sungold, San Marzano (grafted), and Wild Cherry tomatoes and Ancho 211 hybrid and Black Hungarian peppers.  Phew.  I really need to get myself in gear next year and try growing seedlings.
