Re: Is okra a climber?
I dont think so. the one i planted last year was similar to a pepper plant. But i read that someone had one that was like 7ft tall!
whipping your okra
Yes okra will turn into a tower. As it grows you can "whip"....cut....the bottom leaves off the plant. Okra seems to take offense and grow taller to show you who is boss. I'm six feet tall and have had okra stalks taller than me using this method. They get fairly woody at this height and make great poles for lashing together after you knock the old leaves off at the end of the growing season. No trellis needed for this sturdy plant. ![cheers](https://2img.net/i/fa/i/smiles/icon_cheers.png)

Re: Is okra a climber?
As SirTravers has said, okra is not a climber (vine) but more like a small tree! They stand tall and proud and does not need a trellis or other support.

There is a "vining" okra
There is an heirloom veggie which is sometimes called vining okra, Chinese okra, Asian okra, or other regional names, which grows on a vine. The seed pods look like long, ribbed okra, and the flavor is about the same. It grows very long vines and the pods are larger in diameter than the okra I grow in my garden.
I picked my neighbor's for her last year when she was on vacation, and she told me it isn't a true okra but is related to luffas or cucurbits.

For all you want to know about okra!!
It is a southern mainstay in the garden. They get very tall. Be sure and get a spineless variety, or you probably will get very itchy when you harvest. Cut the pods when not longer than 4 inches. If it is tough when you cut into the pod. Dont eat it. It will be tough. Always use tender pods.
PS If anyone gets itchy from okra, squash or cucumbers or any of the other things in the garden like I do. Slather the itchies with apple cider vinegar. Allow to dry on your skin. Vinegar is great for restoring PH of your skin.
