Big windstorm here in southern Manitoba. One tomato is a complete loss, the others may be saved...Storm casualties 2014-06-29122336_zps967dc4dc

If you really want to save it this might be worth a try. Try splinting it. Wrap the stem and splints with tape to secure the pieces. Then add extra stakes for support to the whole plant. Lots of information on line about it.

Bummer. But if you planted one of the main branches and kept it well watered, you might still have a thriving tomato plant eventually. I planted lots of branches last year and got plants out of them.

Before our last frost (I hope!) I covered a couple of my tomato plants with an oblong vented plastic box.

When I removed the box, my Champion tomato had a partially broken main stem, so I splinted and tied it, similarly to what Marc described.

So far, so good!  There are three tomatoes, which increase in size daily, and I see no signs of further damage.

Nevertheless, I bought a substitute plant of the same variety, just in case.

Storm casualties Empty Pecan tree damage.

Post  WardinWake 6/29/2014, 4:25 pm

I just noticed that my best producing Pecan tree lost a large limb in the last thunderstorm.  I have not made it out to the rest of the orchard to check the other trees.  Just a few minutes walk had me back in bed.  YagNabIt no how.  My back is so sore.  I was in a new car showroom and the sticker shock got me.  Collapsed twice there and once in the ER!  WARNING - Stay out of new car showrooms!

God Bless, Ward and Mary.
