Hello!
I am about to plant some potatoes in a 5 gall bucket, but i was also thinking about re-purposing some fermentation bucket for wine making that are a little bit bigger around and deeper.

1 is about 15" wide and 18" deep and the others are 16" across and #6" deep (6.5 gal)

Can I still use them to do the "layer method" or should I cut them down to size to match the height of a 5 gal bucket (about 13")...also, can i plant more than 4 potatoes in the ones that are bigger across?

Thanks for the help!

Happy gardenning!

No need to cut down the bucket.  Use the bigger one.  You can put more seed potatoes in the bottom on top of 2" of compost.  Add soil as the greenery grows until you do this 3 or 4 times depending on the depth of your bucket.  Just keep adding about 2 or 3" or soil at a time.

I used a kitty litter bucket with 3 seed potatoes.  You could put 4 in the bottom of yours.  I didn't want to crowd mine too much so I could get some good size on the spuds.  It won't be enuf to feed your family, but its fun and they taste marvelous.
