Potatoes - Soil for potatoes Empty Soil for potatoes

I watched a youtube video that Mr. Bartholomew posted showing how to grow potatoes in a square bucket. My question is this... he says to put "compost" in the bucket...does he mean only compost (one of the 3 parts of Mel's Mix) or does he mean Mel's Mix that includes the vermiculite and peat moss?

Maybe you could post a link to the video? I'm not sure, but I do know that I threw rotten potatoes in my compost bin 2 autumns ago, and ended up with a surprise healthy potato plant growing in my bin come spring, so I know potatoes CAN grow in nothing but compost! (And overwinter compost at that!)

I grew potatoes in an 18 gal rubbermaid bin using 6 in of MM and adding straw and compost as the plants grew.  Got more potatoes than the chits that I planted.

This is a great question! If Mel said compost that is probably what he meant. If he meant Mel's mix, I am sure that distinction would have been made in the video.

Here is a nice write up about growing potatoes and there are several valuable links in the thread. You may find more information about specifications of growing potatoes and avoiding pests, diseases and other conditions.
