Re: Only a Gardener Would . . .
Go to deliver some vegies to my neighbor and notice the fallen rotting apples in her yard. Will have to mention she can start a compost pile or give them to me for my compost pile.
Go to a state Fair and longingly look at all the wood shavings with animal poo in it and try to think of a way to get it home when my daughter drove me there (her car and trunk were already full of her baby's items). While still there keep thinking of a way to con someone/anyone who would have to haul it off to instead drop it off at my house. Who would I talk to about this! Wishing I had a truck!
Look at all the vegetables that won prizes and know mine look equally good as the first place winner's vegetables. Look at all the canned items and see that my sfg friends' canned items look award winning like those.

Too Funny Triciasgarden
The Big E is going on here and a man came into the hardware store I work at looking for 5 gal. Buckets to take away the bedding shavings and cow manure. I graciously offered to take some of it off of his hands. I was rewarded with his "I'm dealing with a crazy here look" as he quickly scrambled away from me with his buckets. Ahh me, what's a gardener to do.
Love the coat hangers Sanderson!

Lyndee, Got the idea using hangers from one of the many fun photos on this Forum.

Only a gardener would need specific frozen bags of cut up veggies labeled Basement, since that of course is the worm bin food.

or pallets, or lumber scraps, or 50+ types of poop...and know or care about which ones can go directly to the box or must be composted first!Marc Iverson wrote:... get excited about straw.

PS - It was here that I learned the terms 'llama beans' and 'nanny berries'! Did you know that rat poop is called 'raisins'?!

Re: Only a Gardener Would . . .
See new vertical opportunities:
After 17 years, we needed to replace the redwood lattices. I severely pruned the star jasmine and tore down the lattices in preparation. Then DH put up the new ones. We were both thinking about just removing the SJ on this side of the back yard. We still have PLENTY of sections left with SJ, a pretty but horribly dusty plant in this valley. So, both on the same page, he dug them out and it opened up a Whole New Area for vertical vines! You can see the Spaghetti squash at the end of walkway. Two 1" x 2" long poles with nylon netting secured between them. Do you see what I see, all the possibilities? Talk about making lemonade.

That is a huge space freed up, sanderson! Does it get enough sun?

Re: Only a Gardener Would . . .
GG and Marc, The side flower bed doesn't get a lot of sun, but once at the height of the horizontal members, it gets enough for: winter squash, cantaloupe, and 9 ft tall Romas. Up this high, the mockingbird ate the tomato worms for me!
I'm thinking 10 sq feet at one vine per square. I am so excited. Plus I can store the 33 gallon rolling bins at the heavily shaded end. Maybe even a tall cage of leaves. The depth of the bed is a tad over 2" so not large enough for the compost cage. But, hey, some off-the-sidewalk storage.

With the shade at the bottom, you may be able to have some lettuce or spinach or some such cooler weather crop growing at the base of those other crops for longer periods than usual in your summer Fresno heat.

Re: Only a Gardener Would . . .
I just had to put this reply under this topic. . .
New post landarch Today at 15:32
This morning after church I told my wife we had to get coffee grounds from church and the two Starbucks nearby before heading home (we have two Starbucks about 1/4 mile from church).
At a stop light she told me I'm a bit obsessed with composting...but it was hard for me to pay attention because I was eyeing a banana peel someone had thrown out onto the roadway...started to wonder if I could jump out of the car and grab it before the light turned green. I need help...sigh.
Sounds perfectly normal to me . . .

GG, Got one of the boxes completed. I took this at sundown so the color is a little rich. Maybe tomorrow I can get the trellises up.
