I could die happy right now, just at the best tomato sandwich in my life... Just bread, mayo, a huge stack of fresh tomato slices, salt, and pepper. Thanks to my inlaws bringing them home for us from MO!!!

Yummo! I'm gonna make me one when I get home now! How do you keep the slices from sliding off each other?cheyannarach wrote:I could die happy right now, just at the best tomato sandwich in my life... Making a pot of chili with some of my tomatoes and onions. Seriously, whoever posted that link with Guy Clark singing Home Grown Tomatoes is going to get me shot. Everytime I start slicing or even washing any of my tomatoes I burst into song!

Soup tonight, because of the chill in the air. Homemade chicken stock then into the pot went homegrown shallot, friggitello, san marzano tomato, green beans, carrot, garlic, kale, chard, basil, thyme. Will soon sit down with homemade bread ...... yummm, zuppa, mangia delizioso!

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Okra is about to bury us; tall bare stalks that almost need a stepladder to harvest. More of that for supper, plus the first of the sweet potatoes, green onions, and some baby turnips with the greens. I also dug a few green peanuts for boiling.
Today was ten degrees cooler than yesterday at 82, and it was nice for a change. I planted more beets, some snow peas, and some rutabaga.

I was just heading to the kitchen to make my weekly soup pot so I'm going to make yours, Camp. Except with supersonic toms instead of san marzano. Never put thyme in my soup before so this'll be different. Yummo!

In a few minutes going to make sausage and peppers. Saute sweet Italian sausage and decent size peppers that took forever to grow with garden onions over rotini pasta. I will typically spend any amount for this dish from state fair vendors so I'm hoping to meet or exceed fair food expectations.

Sliced up a big ol juicy Rutgers and had a ham, cheese, tomato Sammy on a French loaf. Then headed out to the garden to take down trelles and topped up a couple of the raised beds. Sitting down cooling off right now.

Harvested my first ear of Heirloom Golden Bantam Corn. I could not believe what a deep yellow color this corn is. My first thought was, "oh, that is how corn used to be." And the taste was so good, nothing like what we buy in the stores today. So yummy.

Unit - now that's the corn I remember. Must try next summer!
EASY Tomato sauce
So, who doesn't have extra tomatoes in the garden? Here's a super easy way I've used for years to preserve them as tomato sauce without the work of canning. http://homegardenstogo.blogspot.com/2013/09/super-easy-tomato-sauce.html
Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I picked some Bell peppers (red and green), Banana peppers, and Eggplant.
This was the first year that I grew Eggplant (2 plants) and we have picked over 20 + eggplants! You can see a Butternut squash I picked earlier in the background. Most of my Butternut plants died and I replanted Butternut and Acorn squash about three weeks ago. I think they died due to the LA heat we have been having. Hopefully, these new squash plants will yield a better harvest.

Just picked my breakfast smoothie:
Dwarf kale, collard greens, radish leaves, cabbage, Red Bull's Horn pepper and sugar snap peas for a bit of sweetness.

Yum. I just bought an inexpensive blender / juicer. $32 The juicer part is okay but the blender part is great.
Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Well, with all the rain we've had, tomatoes, peppers, corn are all just a memory. BUT, chanterelles are gifting us big time this year. So far, 12 pounds of them for fresh eating and canning. We pressure canned 9 small jelly jars of sautéed (in butter-garlic-wine) sliced chanterelles, and water-bath canned four large jelly jars of pickled chanterelles (a new recipe for me). And, I'm just starting to peel Asian pears for quart jars, water-bath canning. Because these Asian pears are sweet and without any assertive flavors, we add some lemon zest and lemon juice to the light syrup. PapaVino says it gives them a better flavor. I agree. Nonna

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I had some rainbow carrots that were delayed from bean plants that flopped over on top of them, put it in the blender with some very weird late swiss chard that took all summer to start growing plus farm fresh pears and some apple cider and peanut butter for protein and this strange bright green drink was delicious and filling.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I accidentally knocked off some of my green Brandywine tomatoes, while pruning them, so we had some delicious green fried tomatoes. Those Brandywines were delicious fried up. Really gave this old time dish some extra flavor.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
A casserole in a well fitting lidded cast iron casserole pot using ANSFG carrots , onions , celery and 1/2 pint of out home canned tomatoes with purchased chicken chunks & shop brought mushrooms. Accompanied with soft creamed potatoes , pan ( butter) fried carrots baton ( made for carrots out the garden ) and shop purchased Brussels sprouts that were still nice and crunchy after cooking .
Delicious ! sorry no photos .... it was all eaten by the three of us .
