Last year I tried hard to grow my first pumpkins but the Atlantic Giants all died.
This years compost heap contains those pumpkins and others I collected from a village display.  These volunteers have surpassed last years efforts with no effort on my part. A total of 6 are doing good, here are a couple of them.

Nice!

I've got all sorts of seeds growing in my compost pile, and I'm half tempted to just leave them to grow instead of covering them with more compostable layers. Darn they look healthy!

LM...isn't that the way it goes?  I've tried for years to grow pumpkins for fall. the best year I ever had was when the year before, we literally threw the "innards" over the hillside from pumpkin carving at halloween. The next year, the hillside was covered with vines and pumpkins. We never planted, fertilized or watered anything!  thinking thinking rofl lol!

I didn't realize they would do that. How neat. Now I'm holding out hope for the pumpkin plant that decided to grow in our horse pasture.

LM, is your compost in full sun? I have one growing in mine but my pile is mostly in shade.

S. Gardener, yuppers, these Crazy pumpkins, sometimes we simplytry too hard to grow them and maybe we should not care so much, hah.
Bob, you were right, I must've been having another brain fart to think they were squash at first...and I'm enjoying the heck out of watching the pumpkins grow.
Camp, we know compost rules, that is, lots of varied ingredients and some good old manure.
Millenia good luck, I hear they love manure and compost, loads and loads of it.
CC- They are in shade from sun up till about 2pm, then full sun till 9pm-ish, but there are three inside the heap which get some shade, some sun.  The big green one is getting the most shade from what I can tell, the big leaves blow around a lot kinda hard to make a solid judgement about it.

Just amazing what nature will do without our help!  Those are some beauties!  I only have weeds growing in my compost piles right now, lol!  They came up from the ground.
