Critter had SFG salad for breakfast
First, I noticed the last few of stalks of red romaine, which were about done anyway--I was thinking yesterday of giving them to the chickens--had almost no leaves left. (didn't get a picture, just pulled and composted 'em.) But then, after I saw nobody to play Squish-A-Bug with, I saw what used to be an almost-ready-to-pick cucumber, low on the trellis:

It was either a horde of bugs, or possibly a deer or some other marauding mammal.

Actually, that is the most likely suspect, of the plenty to choose from, who make random appearances in my yard: woodchucks, raccoon, bunnies, skunk, squirrels, opossum, yes, even deer (and of course, bugs--but they don't have the large gnawing teeth evident on that former cuke) Thank goodness.camprn wrote:Woodchuck is my guess.

Oh bummer, stinks when you lose nice fruit. I have a baby watermelon hanging low outside the box just like your picture. Your misfortune is a reminder to myself to come up with something to protect it from little thieves.

Nothing scribbled on the side of your SFG saying "Squishy Squirrel was here!" ?? or droppings? The bite marks look like possibly from a small animal.

Nope, and despite the woods in my backyard, I do live in a city. My sister, upon seeing the picture, thought it could've been a mouse.
