I got chickens in my coop.... FINALY!
The long awaited day has finally arrived and we made the 45 minute trip this morning to pick up my new pullet Buff Orphingtons. The coop after sitting empty for so long after completion, while on vacation and waiting for them to reach pullet stage, now has occupancy. Oldest grand son went with us to pick them up and is he ever excited.
Let the fun begin! Better compost material and fresh eggs are on the horizon.

Gosh baby chicks are cute.
I see you are giving them greens. My kids loved giving the chicks dandelion leaves and the chicks loved them too. One word of caution though, there is not enough grit in the commercial feeds for chicks to handle any other foods. (not a happy experience learning that) You need to find small grit for the chicks like rice grain size. Our best spot to find that is under a down spout or some other place where water is washing away the soil and leaving the grit.

Grit for their gizzards. Chickens do not have teeth, so the chewing happens in the gizzard by grinding against small rocks they pick up. The size they need depends on how big they are. Chicken Grit; Grit for Baby & Adult Chickens

I Think it is a British coin as it has the three lions of the English coat-of-arms. It is a long time since I left England and now the money is all funny to me now.

Bob-
Your Buff Orps are Adorable, So very happy for you! You have to tell us what you name them! The girl that establishes herself at the top of the pecking order could be Regina (Latin for Queen). Just a mere coincidence it's my formal name too ...

Congrats!
And I'm jealous! I'm still trying to find my RIR hens near home so I don't have to feel all the shipping pain. I do have a lead on some, though. Wish me luck! You're going to have a ball watching them do their chicken thing. They are so funny. Of course, I'm easily entertained. Spent most of the weekend watching the ground squirrels chase each other around.

Thanks to each and every one of you for your kind comments and helpful input.
The new residents spent their 1st day exploring their new world. They love to huddle in the corners when humans are not around. I'm sure they were a little in shock after spending the 1st 8 weeks of their life in the breeders tight and protected quarters and then have this huge sudden change take place. They are adorable little girls and not the least bit afraid of us. It was not problem going in and picking them up to place them in the coop for the night. I hope they will feel protected as it will take a grizzly bear to get through their little fort.
Oldest grand son has named them Chicky 1, Chicky 2 and Chicky boom boom. I asked him which one was which and he just gave me one of those looks If you have grands, you know the look I'm talking about I'm sure we will find better names as the days go by and learn their personalities.
An awesome and blessed day of excitement and I even got to spend time in the gardens as well, it just don't get much better than this.

Kat, have you explored Craigs List for your chicks? That is how I found mine.

Craigs List and everywhere else, too
Yep been there. No joy. I'll probably end up ordering them. Those Buff Orps are so cute. You're gonna make me change my mind on the RIRs. LOL Maybe I'll get 2 of each.

It's a British one pound note/coin, almost positive.

That's what I was thinking, because of the etchings on the side. Worth a lot more than a dime!

CarolinaGirl, I did not notice the etchings on the British Pound coin. Of course it would be a high denomination coin.

My daughter helped keep our chicks used to us humans as they grew. She held them a lot as she did with all of our smaller pets and they were all so tame. When our chickens became adults, we were still able to hold them which is important if you need to give them any medical care, move them or just for fun. Nice set up and your chicks are so cute!

Wow, that coop is gorgeous. Do you plan to have an exterior run for them? Do you have a thread on the forum about the building of that coop. It looks just great!
