Tomato - Bush or Vine
Last year I planted Big Beef and Roma Bonnie Plants transplants from my local Home Depot and I plan on doing the same this year. Despite the hot and dry weather, once things started to cool, I got a lot of fruit from each plant. However, my concern is did I grow them right? I gave each plant 4 squares but now after seeing them grow, they really could have used 9 squares. I used a wire square cage that was about 5ft tall, but each plant broke the frames and the frames where always leaning with the weight of the plant.
Because of this, I'm not sure which plant was a vine and which was a bush as the Big Beef is labeled as Indeterminate (i think vine) and the Roma is listed as Determinate (i think bush). I was thinking of using a vertical trellis as described in Mel's book, but I wondering what plant would need it or benefit from it and if so how many squares for each?
Thanks

Hi Twodaend,
Here is a link to a thread about pruning Toms
Pruning Indeterminate Tomatoes
You are correct about Indeterminate and Determinate Toms.
Indeterminate: means they will continue to grow and bear fruit until killed by frost.
Determinate: means they are bushy in form and they slow or stop growing when they begin producing their crop.
I plant my Toms 1 per square side by side 1 foot apart and as you can see from the other thread they do just fine.
Hope this helps.

Re: Tomato - Bush or Vine
Most folks put 1 per square but some put the bush/determinate in a lg pot of MM and save the squares for something else.
