Re: Carrot Week 2013
Hey Admin! WP here!
Glad to join in, again!
Let's see, any back story?
Hmmm...
Last year's 4sf box returns
... it'll set the pace for at least 10 more squares (pics later)!
Can't forget my "old Nantes seed" panic, and your encouragement.
This time I'll be planting "Atomic Red", Shin Koruda, and Nantes.

Why not plant as usual, but keep one square aside for the carrot week fun. That's what I'll be doing.

After losing all my seeds in a 'reorganization' effort, I bought a packet of Rainbow Mix. The day after the purchase I FOUND my reorganized seed location! I now have Rainbow Mix, Cosmic Purple, and Jaune Obtuse (yellow) seeds awaiting the snow melt.

First time poster here!!! Whooo hooo!
Gotta love those dancing Travolta carrots, bet they taste a little 'cheesy' though...LOL
This is my first time growing carrots and I have ordered the Purple Haze and Purple Dragon carrot seeds. I just got the PD seeds yesterday and am going to be grounding them today!! They look to be more of a deep magenta at the top fading into traditional carrot orange towards the bottom. Quite striking.
The Purple Haze is pretty popular this year and is a little backordered. They are just beautiful to look at and I can only hope that they are half as delicious to eat. Should have them in another week. I will keep you posted!

Are you in the planning stages for your 2013 garden? Have a couple of empty squares you don't really know what to do with yet, or perhaps you anticipated a little sumthin, sumthin and left a couple open on purpose?
Well, your assumptions were correct! It's time for our 3rd annual Carrot Week.
Let's change things up a bit this year. How about some colors? Colorful carrots. Scarlet, purple, yellow. You name it, any color goes this year. So get out those catalogs or head to the garden centers and get those colorful seeds before they're all snatched up.
As in years past, this is just forum fun and a time to bond and share your carrots with others. It's a great way to get your kids involved in the garden and a fun way to get them to eat their veggies
Be sure to check in often with updates and pictures of your carrots and their progress. We all love to see the funny shapes, sizes and this year, the colors! Giant carrots, funky carrots, ugly carrots, twisted, fat or bumpy, lumpy carrots! Let's see them all. So secure those seeds, and get those boxes ready!
Carrot Week Begins On April 15th!!!
As years past, let's do three days before the 15th, and three days after. So, the 15th is on a Monday. You can plant your carrots anywhere from Friday, April 12, thru Thursday, April 18.
And don't forget to pay your taxes by Monday April 15th!
1 week + 1 day until CARROT WEEK!

Does "grounding them" mean you are going to plant them or is there some other interpretation of that expression.

Just thought I'd let folks know that the HD in my town is having a 50% off sale on seeds, and they had the Kaleidoscope Mix from Burpee. I imagine if one store is having this kind of sale, they all might be.

Re: Carrot Week 2013
Cindi recommended planting my carrots in a bucket since our weather is not behaving. I have an empty Tidy Cat container that just may become my "carrot square" if I'm going to join you for carrot week. But hey, that could work! Otherwise....the great-white-north is STILL the great-white-north.
A photo from this morning - April 10th - in the year winter just didn't give in.

Re: Carrot Week 2013
Oooooh, Darci, you have my sympathy. Until the last couple of weeks, my beds were still covered in snow. I still have patches of snow here and there in the yard but I had my grson shovel off the beds earlier so they could dry out and warm up.
My carrots will go in, thank goodness.
If I had to do it, I, too, would plant some in a bucket. Buckets seem to be the 'in' thing for extending garden space these days and work wonderfully well. I've used them for tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and this year I plan on some dwarf cukes, zucchini, eggplant, too, and I started 3 potatoes for the heck of it. Go for it!
A plus for using a bucket, you can add some sand to make the soil more pliable for carrot growing.

I actually ate my first carrot from my garden today. I planted them on Christmas Eve. It was really nummy!!! I'm going to plant a new batch this week.
Re: Carrot Week 2013
Carrots. Carrots.
Who's ready to start sowing their colored carrots?
Today officially starts Carrot Week 2013! So break out the seeds and get those carrots going. Seeds can be planted now till the 18th of April for Carrot Week.
Let us know what you'll be growing this year, and check back often with the progress of your carrots. Be sure to take lots of pictures and share anything special you'll be doing with your colorful carrots. Post up your unusual shapes, sizes, short, long, funny, ugly or spectacular looking carrots! We want to see them all!
Carrot Week. Fun for the whole family
This year, I will be growing a multi-colored blend, atomic reds, and purple sun.
And as a friendly reminder, don't forget...Monday is tax deadline day

I spoke too soon!
Earlier this week almost all snow was gone - grass was greening up, and some trees were even starting to have buds. Yesterday brought 8" of wet, sloppy snow. Tomorrow night is forecast for another 3-5" snow. Sunday, freezing rain and snow. And so on, and so forth, for the rest of the week. I may have to make a 'late entry' for Carrot Week. What penalties will the Carrot Police enforce?
