Rain!! Empty Rain!!

Post  littlejo 6/12/2012, 3:54 pm

I wish to express my concern for anyone in the panhandle of Fla. or in the areas of heavy rain. Gardening is probably out of the question. Too much rain can be a pain. Hope all you folks are allright, houses are on high ground and gardens will make it.

So far my garden here in Summerville hasn't come to any harm yet, have had a few burst cherry tomatoes but that's it so far.

Mine is similar to yours, seeing we are only about 19 miles apart, but the folks in Fla in some parts at least have had over 20 inches in 24 hrs. (Jacksonville area)

Right now I would be happy with a half inch of rain.

Day before yesterday was the first "real" rain my home has gotten in months! And I do mean months. Other than a 60 second sprinkle 2 times a couple weeks ago.

The creek is dry, the garden needs watered every day and the only grass that's green is what's around my garden beds.

I feel for those of you getting so much rain that you can't garden though. At least I can still do it, even if I do have to water every day!

Typical summer weather patern here in Baton Rouge. Rain forecast every day but they are scattered showers. They missed my garden most of the week and I actually had to water it yesterday.

Two rainstorms came and split going around us. Lawn is very crunchy and the forcast is 7 days of sun and 90ish degrees of disgusting garbage weather. After a promising terrific first cutting of hay it has gone to hell in my micro climate area of Amanda, Ohio Shocked

This sunday gone .... Local life boats crews who normally only attend salt water incidents had to be rescued by air sea rescue helicopters as a deluge of a five foot deep wall of fresh water cascaded down a small valley in North Wales in to a summer use mobile /trailer park home area as they were attempting to rescue residents who were there . Some residents also had to be rescued by chopper from the roofs of the homes in some cases.

A mile or so up the valley major urgent work had to be undertaken on an earth dam wall because the dam wall had started to move & leak , forcing 600 people to be evacutaed as a class one emergency .

After 24 hrs of work on the dam wall by removing some of it with heavy excavators machinery to let the water out under control into a river to reduce the levels & pressure they were allowed back into their homes .

My newly placed 246 litre water barrel filled up in just over 20 minutes two days ago and if the weather forcast is right tonight and tomorrow should see it filled in a few seconds .. looks like we are in for a deluge of biblical proportions , perhaps two months 8 to 10 inches of rain in 24 hours ..

Thank goodnes we live on a decent hill near to the top with easy natural drainage. If we get flooded here by rain then there will be some very very serious loss of life and property in the local area lower down the hills & in the local towns .

Plantoid that is awful.
I'll exchange a little of your rain for some of my arid conditions
please....and sorry Rooster nobody wants your fires. Even with the heat coming it still managed to have a cold 49 degrees this morning.. what the heck can grow well with a 40 degree temperature swing
