Have any of you guys and gals added the excess weeds from your pond to the compost ?

If so can you let me know how easily it was turned into compost ,. I ask because my weed is in four feet or so long strands but it looks like I will have a good supply over the years .

Depends if it's a pond on private property, or public land..... and if the same is true for all the "feeds" for the pond

Public land (or public accessed land) = may have been sprayed with herbicide for veggitation control....and run-off can be a problem, if peeps in the area aren't enviromentally responsible.

I have the same situation in my yard (tons of aquatic plants that I have to clean out regularly). Personally, I trash the stuff because the city comes through and uses herbicides occasionally & I don't know whats getting dumped into the water upstream.

I have whats known as "Java Moss" in my aquariums. Its very fast growing and prolific. I frequently have to thin it out or it will take over the tank. I've been using that as a green in my compost pile, it breaks down at a moderate speed. I figure it can only be a good thing..Very Happy

When I prepared my goldfish pond for the winter I trimmed back the tops and roots of the plants (e.g., water lilies) that are grown in pots in the pond. The stuff I cut off I put into the compost bin. The pond is small ... about 350 gallons. Sometimes the water becomes "green" from algae growth. We keep about a dozen max small goldfish in the pond.

I'm thinking that in the future I could use water from the pond to wet down the compost piles.

Questions:
1. Does anyone see any reason why I should not put pond plant scraps and pond water into my compost bins?

2. Could I use water from the pond to water my SFG?

I've been putting all the various pond weeds  & sediments out our 4,000 gallon pond into two of the compost bins for the last two & a half years along with plenty of browns  ....mainly wet wheat straw.

I have not noticed any improvements or  declines in the beds where this compost has been used

In another bin I've put in massive amounts of moss that came of the shed roof  & did it as a lasagne layer mix over a six or seven month period & put the finished compost into two beds .. I now have a shed load of moss in those two  beds .
However  I turned them over just before Christmas as they were now totally empty .. It will be interesting to see how it fares this year ..
I haven't done a chemical test to see the nutrients & trace element levels .. Perhaps I should as Moss thrives on acid soil.  I certainly won't  be using moss again ..now if it were Sapgnum moss that would be an entirely different case.

I would say absolutely! It is built in fish emulsion! And the fish will appreciate a partial exchange now and again. You might have to let the new replacement water dechlorinate overnight before adding it to the pond though.

Yeah, afterall, there's a whole system of enclosed hydroponic gardening where fish are living in the water.  You feed the fish, and they feed the plants.  Cool system!
