Herb spacing

I loaned my ANSFG book to my daughter and I'm sorry I did. I should have cut off my right hand instead. I miss it !! Boo hoo !! Anyway, I have some basil, chives, and parsley seeds that I'm thinking of putting in. What spacing should I use? I'm also thinking of getting some thyme.Spacing for that?

when you do herbs , sometimes they do better in large container. i am in SC and things burn up quickly in the yard. I put a long window box type of flower pot in indirect sun on my front porch, It is the difference from having sunshine or burning something with a magnifying glass.
I put in greek oregano,thyme and dill, Every morning i gave it water and every late afternoon if it needed it. It grew so much better for me and freed up my garden for bigger items. I also did the same with chives and sage and rosemary. I would do the rosemary by itself next time. and perhaps put in cilantro or basil.
It also made my porch look nice and smell nice.
some of the herbs like chives and basil do well in a sunny window indoors too.

According to the book, parsley is 4 per square; basil is 4 per sq if small or 1 per sq if large; chives are 16 per sq. Thyme isn't in the book. Guess you got to reach into the space continum to find it.

Haven't grown herbs in SFG yet, but they are one of my big successes in a container on my deck, especially basil, parsley and mint.

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking maybe I will go with large pots. I forgot about mint, but I would like to try some. My mother always gave me a cup of mint tea whenever I had a bellyache. But since I know it can take over the whole garden, a pot would be the way to go. Buckets are cheap at the local donut shop and I can paint the outsides to look attractive.

Yes, definitely keep the mint in a seperate container. Mine is prolific. It comes back year after year without any effort in a shady area. Not sure if I can still get away with basil and parsley in the same area anymore. It's not as sunny as when I first started growing them there.

I'm sure they would do well in MM, but I planted my containers a few years back before I learned about SFG. I followed a plan for a Herb Container Garden in The Washington Post Garden Book by Adrian Higgins.

Sort of a similar concept. Broken terra cotta shards covered with landscape fabric in the bottom of the container. Then added a mix of one part peat to two parts organic humus to one part perlite. Also added two cups of bone meal and one cup of pulverized limestone.
