I need to trim off the runners soon, but I would say this is a great item to pick up. Got mine at Gurneys. I do not use the sprinkler attached though..

Just went out to my 4 squares of strawberries to check for runners. I have 2 squares of each type. Found some runners have already rooted so cut them from the mother. Others that were larger but not rooted I put in small punch cups with a hole in the bottom - filled with MM and then dug cup and all into the soil for stability. I will probably leave them there until I get ready to put down the straw for the winter. I wonder if I should maybe put them in their permanent home before that. What say you.

Since you get very cold/snow I think I'd move them at least 3 weeks before frost to give the plants time to settle in for the winter.

I would put them in their permanent location asap, so they can get some good root growth before winter. I am going to tackle the same project next week. Very Happy

That's the reason that I put them in the cups. I'm going to see how they do for at least the next month. If they survive I will then put them in their permanent home. I soaked the entire square earlier today after the sun was not beating them.

Okay, I read an article about using Remay instead of straw. Has anyone used it to cover the plants for the winter?

Are you talking about the fabric made to keep the soil warmer for fall crops or to keep frost off of spring crops?

I use pine straw. It will start to break down during the winter and early spring I just un-bury the plants and leave the straw. It breaks down and provides the acid that the berries need.

I'd be afraid using the remay. If you got a fairly warm day in the winter, it might get too hot and cause the berries to break dormancy, then it would get cold again?

Pine needles it is. Have plenty of them. How about regular straw also? A combination?

Regular straw? Like wheat straw or oat straw? Only if your straw serves a purpose in your area.

Yes, regular straw. My Mom always covered the strawberries with straw and then took it off in the spring and left the straw as a mulch. Maybe I don't understand what you said.

I didn't mean anything. Just that maybe the reg straw might be more insulating with the snow? We don't get much snow here!

Yes, it can get bitter cold here and sometimes there is a brief warm up that thaws the surface and then it re-freezes. This causes a lot of plants to eventually die. If we have little snow this is even more of a problem. We always water the perennial plants before the ground freezes (if we have had little rain). This also helps the plant to survive.

I think what I will do is to gather both pine needles (have lots of them under the pines in my yard) and get some straw from the neighbor who is a farmer.
