Peas and corn
I was trying to figure out what is plants are compatible, and found an article on the three sisters. It was gear towards row gardening, but I was wondering if anyone has or think it's possible to grow peas in the same square as corn. According to the article the peas grow up the corn stalk, and then leave nitrogen in the soil to help the corn.
What's the lastest you can plant peas in SE Ohio, and the earliest you can plant corn?

I built another box just so I could this. I found an article about how to plant them in a SFG, you put the corn in the middle, beans on the corners (all except one) On the empty one a squash, Worth a try!

Re: Peas and corn
Usually it is beans and corn. Peas are a little too cool weather for growing the same time as hot weather corn. That said, do a search on three sisters and you will see lots of experience on this forum. I have done it myself and was very happy with the results.
The only caveat - plant the corn first so it have a chance to get some height (4-6") before planting the beans.

The article was referring to fall harvested peas, they grow up the stalks of the corn. So should I plant the peas around the base of the corn or in seperate boxes? According to my ANSG book corn is suppose to be four per square, and peas eight per sqaure, so I was thinking when it's time to plant my fall peas, put two around each stalk of corn.

Re: Peas and corn
I think with 3 sisters, you plant the beans/peas in the same square as the corn, so they can grow up the stalks. They don't get their own square. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong

Chopper - thanks for the planting order advice. I figured I'd give it a try this year. Corn will be a grand experiment in our garden this year.

Re: Peas and corn
I did some looking and yes you plant and the beans/peas in the same squares as the corn, and you squash or in my case some really big pumpkins in the four corner squares. Two to four more weeks and I can safely plant them, I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas lol.

Re: Peas and corn
I think in an old fashioned garden the squash was meant to meander on the ground and be sun protected by the corn. However, for our purposes that is not practical.
