Shade Cloth? Empty Shade Cloth?

Post  TheJH 4/6/2010, 11:33 am

I want to set up some shade cloth to protect my lettuce this summer. Never used it before. I searched here and did not get anything. Also searched the internet and get all kinds of info. I'm a little confused of what to get. What color, % of blocking? Where to order? Any suggestions?

Shade Cloth? Empty Re: Shade Cloth?

I'd have to say look at what your local nursery is using. Here in southeast New Mexico our nurseries have the darkest shade cloth they can get as the sun is terribly strong around midday. I haven't noticed any growth being stunted by the shade either.
As far as finding shade cloth...my local Lowes and Home Depot both have several different colors to choose from.

We bought ours from FarmTek.com They are super folks to deal with.

From their site:

"Shade Houses & Material

Shade cloth is manufactured from knitted polyethylene fabric that does not rot, mildew, or become brittle and can also be purchased in bulk and if you need it hemmed, we can do it. FarmTek shade material comes in multiple shade densities and can be used for applications such as livestock housing, poultry buildings, greenhouses, hoop structures, barns, kennels, canopies, and more. Shade fabric helps protects livestock, pets, plants, and people from direct sunlight and works well as a carport, privacy barrier, fence or windscreen. Easy to install and remove, prefabricated shade panels are available with grommets to save you time and money, and come in 30% to 80% densities to meet your specific application. Offered in a wide variety of sizes, our shade material is durable, offers superior ventilation, improves light diffusion, reflects summer heat and keeps greenhouses and livestock cooler. We also carry, Aluminet®️ Reflective Shade, which offers superior year-round climate protection that both shades and cools."
