ornamental sweet potatos

I can't seem to find the thread now, but back in the late fall I was cleaning out some hanging baskets where I had grown the blackie sweet potato vine. Lo and behold, there were one or two potatos in the baskets ranging from lemon sized to grocery store size. I wondered if they were edible and did a search that said yes, but not very tasty. But I also wondered if I could use these roots to get plants for 2012 hanging baskets. Article said yes so I put the potatos in a baggie but didn't seal it. In early Jan or so ago I was rooting around in my plant stuff and there in the baggie were some tiny sprouts. I moved the baggie into a south window and left them alone for right then, but a few weeks later the sprouts were getting a bit bigger so I moved them to a container of water. Last week I cut off 2 slips and potted them up. These plants ran over $3 last year

I envy your ability to grow these yummy veggies. We don't have the right climate here to grow them, although I'm trying to come up with a way to warm up a tall bin to try.

These are not eating potatos. They just make beautiful hanging baskets and don't usually form big tubers like pictured. I credit the MM.

I wonder why they don't consider them good for eating? Is it because they weren't grown in the traditional way? Just color me confused Smile

Wish I could find the original thread I posted on this.

These are not sweet and are stringy. They are not dangerous to eat, just don't taste good. It is the variety not how they are grown.
