Neophyte from PA

Hi all, I'm Bill from Pa and am a complete neophyte to SFG and someone who has not really gardened in more years than I care to think about. Rolling Eyes

Looking forward to learning and will probably be doing more lurking than posting for quite some time. Very Happy

Feel free to jump in when you feel comfortable. Welcome aboard!

There are plenty of resources here for you to read, but nothing gets you off to a better start than Mel's book in the banner at the top of the index page/home page. The forum is a great compliment, and a place to discuss in a little more detail....or ask questions for clarification of what you read.

Also, check into your regional forum for more localized information, especially when spring nears. Speaking of spring, now would be a great time to look into your frost date so you know when to start planting some of the real early season starters like broccoli, if interested.

I'm your "neighbor" in Maryland. Have you had the chance to read the All New Square Foot Gardening book yet? It's a GREAT resource for all the basics of SFG.

In addition to the "regular" Forum, we also have a Mid-Atlantic Regional Forum. This is the spot for topics specific to our region.

You will find that this is a great group of people eager to share information with you and help you make your SFG a success.

I'm in zone 5b, in the Land of Yeungling. I hope you share your successes and not-so-successes here in the forum.

It's sort of difficult to start out because anything new has a learning curve. Ask away and the folks here answer pretty quick.

What do you plan on growing?

Right now I'm primarily looking at some berries and simple veggies to start with. I want to put in a couple of raised beds and put in three or four blueberries, some strawberries, tomatoes, lettuce, maybe some broccoli and onions or shallots. Start small and work up from there. I'm also contemplating putting in some raspberries and blackberries along one wall of the house that gets a lot of really nice sun in the afternoons, easily gets 4 -5 hours per day this time of year. Smile

PERFECT! This is exactly what we recommend. Many times people start too big and feel overwhelmed.
