New to Gardening - Georgia

I have been lurking around the site for a month or so now, thought it was time to stop being lazy and join. I'm in middle Georgia, just north of Macon, bout an hour south of Atlanta. I have never had a garden before but I've been reading up and hope to have a vegetable garden this coming year.

So far I have found vermiculite, worm castings, mushroom compost, cow, and black hen. Having a hard time hunting down that fifth type. I went ahead and started a compost pile next to my blacksmith shop but so far it doesnt have much bulk. I basically live in the forest so I have a fairly unlimited supply of pine needles and leaves but as I understand it the 'green' components are severly lacking. Im trying to add kitchen scraps every day or so as they come.

Do you drink coffee? Coffee grounds, strangely enough, are considered green.

You are lucky to be starting out with SFG! One of my very favorite things from Mel's book is when he says that it takes new gardeners 2 hours to learn SFG, and experience gardeners two weeks!

(I didn't look it up to make sure I was using the two correct time frames, but the concept is definitely right on. I have had so many experienced gardeners tell me, about different things, "Oh, you can't do it that way. Gardens need ________" Fill in the blank -soil, tilling, whatever.

welcome. I think the leaves would be a great addition. I'm not a "pro" but I think all of your manures are considered "green". sounds like you need more browns, ie. dead leaves etc. You can also add shredded paper, just learned that one too! Not "glossy" paper in magazines etc. Good luck!

Hi - I am in Brooks, Ga. (just south of Fayetteville, about 30 minutes south of Atlanta). I do not know if Pike's Nursery is in your area, but they have many types of compost. I was able to find my fifth type at Pikes.
