I decided to seive the contents of my black plastic compost bin, the kind that you can turn over to stir the contents. It has been ongoing for what seems like ages and so far it has not turned into that lovely crumbly black gold that we so love.

I managed to get about a third of the contents through my wire sieve, but my question is concerning all the worms that were there.

Among the contents were many clumps of tennis-ball to golf-balll-sized lumps what seemed like black soil, pretty moist and fairly solid. I broke them open and inside were dozens of worms in each clump. Red ones about two inches long. I should imagine I had hundreds of worms there. Were they worm nests and should I have left them alone?

I'm curious as to where the worms came from, I guess in some of the dirt you have added to your compost bin?
Worms don't make a nest, but you can save them and have a worm bed. they will eat veggie scraps, paper, etc.
They did not finish the compost for you for they don't like to be messed with(turned over) If they are red worms, they don't like to be stirred in with their poo(worm castings)
I bet the compost that was ready will be really good! full of worm castings.

I cannot give advice on keeping the worms, I've only had my worm bed for about a month, but I'm sure there are some folks on the forum that have worm farms.

I did try a worm tower year before last but somehow none of them survived.
Spent about $60 altogether.

Anyway, I have added my siftings to to other bags of compost that I have made so that all the goodness is evened out. A bit like blending whisky or wine.

The rest including many worms I added to the current compost pile. Lots of goodies in there for them.
