Howdy Folks:

While I was at work my dear Mary picked a one gallon zip lock bag full of strawberries and had a nice bowl chilled and ready for me when I came home.

Table Top Square Foot Gardens are so easy to harvest from and they sure do produce.

God Bless, Ward and Mary.

As soon as I get my broom out of the shop, I'll be flying over to share those strawberries. MMMMMmmmmm, lucky you.

Enjoy!

I had two strawberry plants that only gave me about a dozen strawberries; and then, I only got them one at a time. How many plants do you need to get a gallon of 'em?

Are your strawberries first year plants because if they are you will not get many berries off them. Next year they should do better.

I have four first-year plants and I picked off the flowers and only allowed two berries per plant just for a taste. Next year I am looking forward to more as the plants should have a better root system. Each of my plant now have runners, and those will be potted on and make next year's maiden plants which again I will deflower. Very Happy

Oh I didn't know about all that. I just bought a couple of plants at the garden centre. I did that last year too and just threw them away at the end of the year thinking they didn't work. Mine are hanging in a bucket; (make shift topsy turvy) do you think I can just leave them that way over the winter?

Strawberry plants should last at least three years.

First year they are settling in and making a good root system, then the second and third years they reach maximum yield and some people can make their plants last a year or two longer.

Also I was told to only allow four runners off each plant. So I started with four plants this year.

Next year I should have four fully producing plants and sixteen first year plants, and so on, increasing my stock until I have enough for my needs and maybe selling or sharing some of them if I cannot bear to throw anything away.

Of course, I could have started with 16 second-year plants but I wonder how much that would have cost?

Okay well, mine are in buckets though; do you think that matters? I saw a kit for hanging strawberries and decided to save some money by doing my own.

My only question about overwintering would be if they would get enough protection from the cold in the bucket...

or just set them on the ground and cover them with piles of straw. The straw can then be used in the compost pile next spring.
