Mel's Book has some, but not all commonly available plants. Is there a more expansive list available which would include other plants? Thanks

My recommendation would be Google. Use the plant's name and include "spacing" in your search. I just searched "celery spacing" and got this in seconds...

"When celery plants are 2 to 4 inches tall, thin to 2 inches apart, transplant in open, in rows 2 feet apart, spacing celery plants 6 inches apart in the row."

Now, to get Mel's spacing, you divide into 12 and square it. So, 12 divided by 6 is 2. 2 squared is 4. So, celery can go 4 per square.

To verify the math, we all know carrots go 16/square. They say to thin to 3 inches. So, 12 divided by 3 is 4. 4 squared is 16.

Happy Gardening!

Can you name what you need info for. There is some disagreement among users about spacing of some plants. You can figure some out by its plant family and growing size as a reasonable example. Celery and parsnips for example are in the carrot family so I have guessed at 9 on parsnips and 4 on celery, up to 12 or 16 mite be doable on parsnips but I didn't want to gamble on tighter spacing not allowing good size development. Four could be tight on the celery but I harvest it a few stalks at a time from each plant and close setting mite help blanch them a bit. So for lack of hard rules you can swag and experiment within reason.

Will this work for watermelon and cantaloupe

fence on east to use as trellis 4'

blank sugar baby blank blank
sugar baby tbd tbd sugar baby
tbd tbd tbd tbd
loupe loupe loupe loupe
trellis 7'

That would be 2 squares per watermelon and pulling the vines to the fence and 1 square per cantaloupe up a trellis. I'm hoping the cantaloupe can provide shade to some leafy stuff that might not make it in our heat otherwise.
