Community gardens are always a good thing. Will you be a part of this plan?

We have one in our small village and aid feeding those that use the local Food Pantry.

I handle the blog for our community garden at:

http://raymondcommunitygarden.blogspot.com

Its great to be part of this plan and to rent a few extra rows besides growing at home in my SFG.

I just found out about this initiative yesterday, so I'm not sure how my level of participation in this project is going to shake out.

Fun!

I'm working with one of my Trustees to start a community garden program for teens here. She's a Master Gardener, so we're going to do a JR. Master Gardener program so they can earn community service and become certified. We've got plans to put in at least one SFG out behind the building, maybe two. We'll be building them ourselves at one of the program nights. I'm going to donate some of my seedlings, so that we can have a headstart on plants. We have plans to cover all kinds of topics- vermiculture, organic gardening, hydroponics, etc. Hopefully it goes over well and teens come! (*Please cross your fingers for me, our first session is tonight, and I *really* hope people come!)

Quiltbea, I like the idea of the blog, mind if I steal?

muffinater,
Feel free to 'steal' anything about my blog you like.

We find that having a separate blog for our community garden is a big help because in our case, it deals with our garden itself. I have become the official blogger for our group. I have the email addresses of all our members and anytime I add an article or something of interest to our group. I send out a group email to everyone mentioning it and at the bottom is my signature with the blog URL so they can check in. They have found it very helpful.

Actually, I have a specific blog for our community garden:
http://raymondcommunitygarden.blogspot.com

if you want to see how that one looks. Since this is not SFG, but it is organic, I change some of the growing instructions a little or eliminate things that don't work for our community rows.

Its great for announcements of OUR meetings, dates and places for 'talks' about composting, seed starting, etc., new garden books at our local library, and this year we'll be having more recipes to make from our produce and more pics of our ongoing garden rows along with info pertaining to our specific Food Pantry efforts.

I, too, have donated seedlings to the group because some don't know how to start warm-season crops so the director and I both start several to share with everyone.

Besides, a blog is a lot of fun.
Good luck and I hope your garden endeavor is a huge success.

Thanks!

I did 'steal' your idea, and wanted to share our blog with you, since you were so generous. Very Happy

I'm the only one with posting privileges, but I will let the kids (teens really) email me things to add. That way there isn't any risk of them sharing information they shouldn't. I only use my "public" work associated account, so I'm not worried about me. It's posted on our town's site as it is (and my facebook!).

We had our first meeting regarding the community garden and I let the kids who came pick a name. They picked Bloomer Boomers. Community Gardening in Our town 930802 Here's the link: http://bloomerboomers.blogspot.com/

Great blog. I love it.
The name for the garden is super. They sure chose a good one.
Good luck in your endeavor. I know you'll do a good job with it.
Love the worms. They make the best compost. They are the best little workers you'll have in your garden.
Good luck,
