Middle of November already

Not much to report for November in my garden.

Quite a few of my seeds germinated, but some evil creature mowed them all off at ground level, leaving me with nothing but a half-dozen lettuces that were already established. I think I'll run with what I have, then tarp my box when they're finished and just leave it until spring. I believe this qualifies my first foray into fall gardening as "abject failure".

Otherwise, other than a few very mild days at the beginning of the month, it's been very seasonal -- that's a nice word for cold, grey, windy, and pelting down rain every day for over a week, with no relief in sight until next week. (Can you tell I'm not a fan of winter?)

I can't even rake or sweep leaves for compost, as they're a sodden, decomposing mess -- at least they'll compost the yard (hey, gotta find a silver lining somewhere).

So...looks like I'm back to embroidery, reading, and poring over seed sites and catalogs for the next few months, until it's time to start my spring veggies downstairs.

Sorry this is a bit of a bummer...but my gardening days have come to a screeching halt, thanks to la Dame Nature being in a bit of a sour mood of late!

I'm right there with you when it comes to winter. I've always disliked fall just because winter is right behind it.
I live for spring and summer, tolerate fall and complain all the way through winter with my long johns on trying to stay warm. I don't know how the people up north deal with so much cold. Brrrrrr

I'm so sorry that some critter ate your garden. Bummer.

We gave up on growing beans because we never saw a mature plant - much less a bean! The bunnies and deer were VERY happy, though.

My fall garden is my first try at SFGing. So much to learn. I was a couple of weeks later than the desired time getting some of my seeds in, but everything came up. Some things jumped up thickly (turnip and mustard greens), while others are creeping at best (beet greens, kale, and creasy).

My biggest lesson learned is to FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS and not plant so thickly. Boy, that's a hard one for me. (If a little is good, then a lot is better, right? lol)

But, the cabbage moths are happy for the extra food. I found and killed 3-4 when I was picking a 'mess o greens' for dinner. Boy, they are hard to spot on a turnip leaf! EXACT same color. I soaked my greens in salt water to, hopefully, kill any worms I missed. (If not - free protein)

I was trying to harvest enough kale to try a new recipe for an Italian style white bean and kale soup, but my kale is slow.... growing. So, I had to use all of the greens to get enough.

I was unsure whether DH and DS would eat soup with lots of greens floating in it or not, but they 'chowed down'. It was delish!
I'm thankful they are not picky eaters. They will eat anything that doesn't eat them first! That's why I started gardening. I was going broke at the grocery store check out line!

When I read all of the posts where others are having great harvests with a wide variety of veggies, I get a little jealous (in a good way), but it spurs me on to read more and prepare for spring. If they can do it-I can do it. (Must order seeds and gather supplies for some winter sowing.)

I love rain, but we don't get it here the way you do there. Hang in there. Spring's coming!
