Did you start out gardening with a more adventurous spirit than you have now?

Or are you more adventurous now than in the beginning?

I would be MUCH more adventuresome if I lived in another area. I'm technically WAY in violation of our HOA by even having "non approved vegetative material"...etc. I just know one of these days someone is going to complain and I'll be told to remove my two very nice raised beds... all it takes is one complaint...

Well, I haven't gardened topless yet - too many balconies in the neighborhood. But on those 100+ days...

OK OK ..."risque" was my poor attempt at humor.

But you got the drift trustinheart!

I have just noticed myself getting more adventurous in what I want to grow or a method to try...and I wondered about other folks.

Did you start out practical and stay that way?
Did you start out adventurous and stay that way?
Did you start out practical and drift into the other end of the spectrum? Or vice versa?

For me, SFGing has become an obsession! This is my first year for it and I really started late. I have a list a mile long of what I'm going to grow next year. My sisters think I'm crazy and I'm sure some of my clients do, too. I am planning on taking time off work next spring so I can spend more time in the garden. (For me to take time off is unheard of!)
I am defiantly starting off adventurous and the getting more adventurous! (no topless gardening for me though... the church's pastor lives next door!) Laughing

All right - serious answer. I started out conservative and I am now more excited to try new varieties - something I hadn't really considered before. If it wasn't on the rack at HD I never thought to look elsewhere...

Well my plans for gardening in my Speedo & feather boa this season kinda fell through with my ailment (nobody t too see me in the middle of the night) Very Happy

Seriously though ...what a difference 5 weeks makes.

I wouldn't have thought about doing anything besides transplants from the home-improvement stores/nursery until 3 weeks ago. now I'm sitting here with no desire to plant anything fom the box stores in my next planting ... and 8 packs of tomato seeds of various varieties that I've never heard of before ...LOL

This is me, too. Getting excited about heirloom varieties and such, rethinking veggies I "don't like" (turns out they are just ones I didn't grow up eating, either because they weren't available in our area or they tend to be expensive), and well, I just sat here eating a bowl full of raw veggies for breakfast!

As for risque, well, I am growing a 1 year old little boy as well, and if he needs some feeding out in the garden, I have no problem giving it to him straight from the tap! (We do have fences.)

elliephant! you rock
Just want to show my support...too many nursin' mamma's don't get much...

My husband hides his face anytime we are in public and I see a mamma nursing her babe...cause I walk right up to her and tell her to keep up good work and that she's doing a great job. I can't even tell you how many disparaging remarks I had when my babes were little...I just like to let 'em know someone is on their side.

lol! Acara, even though there is nobody around to see you, the image that conjures up in my mind is quite something. Would you be wearing high heels as well or just flip flops?

so you are hooked as well on the gardening and starting your own seeds. Another one bites the dust.

I am becoming more adventurous even though I have row gardened for years. I am trying things like fall plantings, which I have never done before, cover crops and new varieties as well as starting more of my own plants instead of buying them.

In terms of risque gardening, well, I have done a couple of things but I won't elaborate. Risque? or Not Risque? 615992

Flip-flops of course ..... Mel's Mix wasn't condusive to stillettos when I tried it (kept sinking).

Also, I calculated the increased aeration/circulation rate (by perforating the Mel's mix with the high-heels) & the associated root damage outweighed any growth benefit What a Face affraid ..LOL

The stilettos would be good for making the little planting holes for the seeds!

Risque? or Not Risque? Empty More adventurous

Post  ander217 10/12/2010, 7:09 pm

We're absolutely more adventurous. In fact we embarrassed ourselves at Baker Seeds by buying so many different tomato varieties. It seemed there was always one more we wanted to try. (Anyone want to rent us a few acres to give them all at least one square?) Smile

I successfully grew transplants for the first time this year, too. And then there was the whole new trellis thing - I think that was my favorite part of the garden this year.

BTW, Elliephant, I agree with Middlemama. You rock. My daughters dealt with the same thing when they were nursing their children.

I started out pretty darn adventurous, and, sadly, paid for it, but I am completely unrepentant. More better, and re-do, re-do!!!

Seriously, I had a ball. Tried huge plants, small plants, old favorites but in heirloom varieties I'd mostly never heard of before.

Hubby was very dubious about it in the beginning, but by the end of the summer he had really gotten into it. We were both amazed by the change in numbers and diversity in wildlife around the garden. I also canned for the first time this year and I'm hooked. Just today I bought 5 pounds of tomatillos (salsa making this weekend!)

Post  milaneyjane 10/17/2010, 1:49 pm

In some ways less adventerous...or maybe just smarter. After trying some plants that didn't do well the past few years I gave up trying to grow them (dill being the big one).

But I am also willing to try new plants each year. This year was throwing caution to the wind and planting 36 dahlia bushes instead of just trying one or two. I also canned for the first time and am hooked!!!! I am already planning next years garden based on what I will be able to can. Oooh, I almost forgot back to last spring. I set up a basement grow lab and started all my peppers, tomato, zinnia, marigolds and allysum from seed for the first time. Yesterday I was out collecting bean seeds to save for next year (also a first). Gardening is all about trial and error.
