That will be a nice delight.
Is this your first salad garden?

I have not been able to grow lettuce. Too hot and it always
burns up. I had no shade anywhere. All sunshine here. I built a
lattice roof on my deck just so i could have a Salad Garden but I wont
get to really do that until Spring. Right now I just a have a few
lettuce plants in a pot under that lattice roof. I need to build
some grow boxes.....etc.........

Carolyn,

I got lettuce that is heat tolerant... cannot remember off hand what kind it is. I have the opposite problem that you have, more shade than sun :-)

Beautiful, Kristan! Congratulations on your first salad. Looks lovely... and so fast, too; seems like you were just building your boxes! Very Happy (I'm jealous, too... my fall lettuce is going in this weekend.)

That looks delicious! I planted some lettuce this spring but didn't harvest it before it bolted, although I got a delicious little bowl of salad from a wild lettuce mix that I got from SESE. This fall I planted three kinds of peas, two kinds of broccoli greens (raab and Spigariello), and four kinds of lettuce (green and red deer tongue, drunken woman, and more of the wild lettuce mix). The peas are a couple of inches tall already, so I have high hopes for them Smile

good luck Megan. The lettuce seems so much more fragile than the other salad greens. The others just stick up and let me know they are ready...the lettuce flops easily (if that makes sense).

And, an update...my daughter ate most of the salad after school. But she was super excited about it. Hard to say no when the kiddos are begging for fresh garden greens!

And here's a huge HURRAY for kids asking for fresh veggies, how great is that?!!?

My early spring lettuce seemed really fragile too... but turned into some remarkably stubborn (yet tender!) stuff. I am hoping the fall will be the same. I have to say... going through a season makes me much more confident. I was covered in woe when the wind broke off a pole bean stalk this spring. (I am laughing hysterically at myself about that, now....)

try your dressing using White Balsamic vinegar. You won't need the honey

In a 1 pint jar with a lid
1/3 C white balsamic vinegar
1 tsp fresh chopped oregano
1 tsp fresh chopped thyme
little salt and pepper
2 tsp dijon mustard
2/3 C olive oil

Shake well to blend, great with lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes and feta cheese.
