Onions

I have had onions from sets growing since March. Slow buggers. They did not seem to be bulbing and I had resigned myself to failure, but let them stay since the green part hadn't actually died and fallen over and I didn't need the square.

Lo and behold, I noticed one had fallen so I pulled it out expecting nothing. I got AN ONION. Actual supermarket sized yellow onion! Ok, small supermarket sized, but fully bulbed onion nonetheless. Oh me of little faith. Now I am excited. I have 2 red onions that have survived so far and about 6 more yellow onions so I am excited about getting an actual harvest from them.

Last night my grandson, who is all of 6 told me he *has* to start his garden. I thought maybe it was a school project. Nope. It is simply time. LOL. So as I harvest bed #1 for a September planting, I will leave a few squares for him. He is in the process of making his decision as we speak. UPDATE: He gets 3 squares and he has chosen carrots, broccoli and dill and cilantro LOL. I think we are OK with the cilantro, we shall see if the dill will grow or not.

Chopper! you have an onion!! How awesome. Mine are all rather small too. They were last year too but nevertheless, I got enough last year to last almost until Christmas.

I am going to try to find some to plant this fall and also will use bonemeal when I plant them. Perhaps next year I will get a better return.

Congrats on your grandson starting his own garden. That is so exciting. It is wonderful to see the kids get excited about growing stuff.
