I have had a horrible year with cucs too. I finally have them growing but they are all deformed.

Re: trouble with cucumbers
A number of people on the forum are finding that their compost seems to be deficient. I've had to fertilize, but I am to blame for that one since I couldn't find any decent compost at all. That being said, I have to say that this year has been an absolute runaway success and I'm never going back to row gardening!!

Vegetable MD has photos. You might want to look there and see if you find the problem and the solution. Bad Cuke Photos
Re: trouble with cucumbers
I think I will get the soil checked cause some of my stuff just would not grow with the 1/3 1/3 1/3 mixture...bummer

Re: trouble with cucumbers
It is the way to go. The joker in the deck is the compost. Also people get a 2 cf bag of peat and do not realize that once it fluffs, you can use less in the garden. I think people do put in too much peat sometimes.
Compost: if you had 5 kinds of quality compost you absolutely would not be having nutrient problems. That is why Mel recommends that many kinds. As the seasons pass and you add more compost - your own that you can put a large variety of things in - not just "forest compost" like some of the commercial brands, you will see things pick up. It isn't the formula that is lacking, it is the available compost. That is key.

Re: trouble with cucumbers
I haven't the foggiest how to boost potash, but I'm sure someone here does! At least you now have a starting point, and that is great news.
Re: trouble with cucumbers
If you have a fire pit you can sprinkle a bit of wood ash around the base of the stems. click me to see info
