Finally Posting
I wanted to thank everyone for the wealth of information that is posted on this forum. This is my first year of growing veggies, and thanks to what I've learning from Mel's book and this forum, I think that I've had a good deal of success (especially considering that everything was planted late since the hardscaping/raised beds were also built this spring).
I'm already planning for next year, doubling the size of the garden and planning what goes where. One of my favorite activities is planning, and how nice to find that it goes so well with veggie gardening!
I'll post pics soon, for I'd love some opinions and feedback. Now if I can just get rid of those horrid Japanese beetles!
Thank you!

Michelle: If we could get a tasty recipe for Japanese beetles and squash bugs we could make a fortune.

Found Japanese Beetle info HERE, HERE, and HERE. It should give you some good planning info.

Thanks, Chopper! I've tried both Neem oil and another, all-natural alternative. The Neem oil was rinsed off fairly quickly by rain, and an hour after I sprayed the other, the darn bugs were all back to the salad bar.
I sprayed both of these within a couple days of each other, and it did cause damage to the newly-sprouting strawberry leaves.

It's nasty, but it has worked for me in the past. Ever heard of bug juice? In the old Organic Gardening & Farming mags from the 80s using bug juice was very popular & I did it back then. I forget the scientific reasons why it works. Anyway, here is the basic idea: You hand pick the bad guys & put them in an old blender that you no longer use in the kitchen with a little water & process into as fine a particle as you can. You then strain the mixture & put in your sprayer with more water to spray your veggies. You can use it for cabbage loopers, beetles, squash bugs.
