First real meal from garden
Besides eating as I was picking, last night we had our first real meal from the garden - yellow squash and green beans from the garden - steamed with cabbage, onions, and potatoes not from the garden. It was so yummy and gratifying to partake in the fruits of my labor (especially with the battle I've been having with bugs lately)! Well I was going to post a picture but I still can't get it work for me. So you'll just have to use your imagination I guess.

Absolutely the best feeling. I am only buying some protein and occasionally bread, eggs and cheese at the market anymore. Love actually harvesting something from the garden. A real treat.

Chopper, are you going to be able to grow a winter garden? I am going to be on the lookout for your posts come the long cold winter.Chopper wrote:Absolutely the best feeling. Re: First real meal from garden
I absolutely am going to grow a winter garden. One reason I wanted at least 6 beds was so I could plant once a month. Now I want 20 beds, but that is for later. Why live in So Cal if you do not take full advantage. What we miss in beautiful trees and thunderstorms we make up with in sun and warmth. I already have it plotted out. We just have to see what cooperates and what doesn't.
In the area I am in the last few years have brought almost no frost and lots of rain, and 5 nights in a row of killing frost and almost no rain. So, as always, it is a crapshoot. Those should be easy fixes tho - automatic watering and a plastic cover should handle it. I have never grown veggies in the winter, so I am excited.
I was hesitant about posting because I didn't want to seem unfeeling to those looking at snow.

OOohhh but we can enjoy gardening vicariously through your posts!
I'm hoping that a cold-frame will give me at least something through the winter. I have a nice south-facing area alongside the driveway, against the side of the house that should be perfect for a coldframe. I just need to build it!

I think the 4X4 configuration is ideal for the hoop houses and the ability to extend the seasons a bit on either end. Another plus.
Keep posting

PLEASE keep posting through the winter. Those of us looking at snow and ice will appreciate it then more than ever.
Bec, congratulations on your first garden meal. I agree, there's nothing like it.
