Another sweet pickle recipe

This is an old recipe from my grandmother that is super easy & very good. You don't have to seal the jars so if you are like me & save the flats from your jars, it puts them to good use.
For each quart jar:
Pack jars with WHOLE clean cukes.
Add:
1/2 teaspoon alum
1 teaspoon pickling spices
1 tablespoon pickling salt (or plain salt without iodine)
1 cup vinegar (5% acidity).
Water to finish filling the jar to completely cover the cukes.
Use 2 piece lids, but no need to seal. Let them set for 6 weeks.
When you need sweet pickles, just open a jar, drain and rinse cukes, cut into whatever size you want. Put back in jar and add:
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons water
Let stand til the sugar dissolves.
They are very crisp.
I like to use half gallon jars since I have plenty of them & just double the above ingredients.
