Re: what is your favorite paste and sauce tomato
Good question! I don't have one as I am just canning this year for the first time. I would be very interested to hear what people say.
Re: what is your favorite paste and sauce tomato
This year I'm trying an heirloom paste tomato called Opalka. I've read so many good things about them. They had a rough start, but they are really starting to take off now, I'll let you know if they become a favorite after we get to taste one! They are supposed to be as good for eating as for canning. I have twelve plants, so think I should get a few!

It's my first year, too and am anxious to see what people say. I bought a paste tomato from WalMart and can't even remember the variety. It already has a baby tomato on it! I got a Rutgers from a local garden store, but it is not doing well. A guy here at work gave me a generic beefstake & cherry and they are doing great! And I have a few Isis & Black Cherry plants that are doing great! I'm set for cherry tomatoes, but think I need to find something else. There's a farmer's market down the street today - maybe I'll stop on my way home & see what I can add.

I've always used Roma and have been happy with it. This year I am also trying Italian Market, Romeo Roma and Sausage -- all heirlooms. They are full of green tomatoes so will report back after they turn red.

Re: what is your favorite paste and sauce tomato
I stopped at the local farmer's market on my way home yesterday and told the lady who was selling tomato plants about my Rutgers. I told her what I was looking for and the problems I was having so far. She suggested an Empire. It's a hybrid and a determinate, but I'm trusting her expertise. Got it in the ground bed last night. Has anyone ever grown this kind? I wanted an heirloom, but I also want healthy plants.
I also noticed several baby tomatoes on my roma - woo hoo!

I have grown a variety each year but prefer the Roma for any canning or sauces. This year I only planted Roma and cherry
