Tomato tree

I'm still looking for first hand information on the tomato tree. I had one once and it was really big but a it froze when we had a blizzard and It never got to the fruiting stage. I'de really like to hear from anyone who ever had one. Did it live up to expectation? You see them advertized all the time and I am tempted to try again.

Where is Surprise - what kind of weather? Is that where you were when you had a blizzard?

I've never heard of a tomato tree, but in New England, that isn't much of a surprise!

(Pun not intended - promise!)

Hi Martha.

I was still living in Ohio at that time, about 20 miles south of Lake Erie. About 50 miles east of Cleveland. Now I live in Surprise, Az. Just west of Phx. No more blizzards, thank you very much. Tomato tree Icon_biggrin

You may see the tomato tree advertised on tv or Youtube.com. or even in the coupon section of the sunday paper sometimes. Wheather it's a real tomato or not I don't know. I never got to the fruiting stage with the first one. I have decided to go ahead and order one though, just because I am so curious about it.

I saw the ads about that giant tomato. I have always thought it was just over-fertilized regular tomato. Even with regularly growing tomato you can get really high and big plant with some types of tomatoes.

i think its a different species than regular tomatoes. I remember looking it up in the past, I think it is a tropical type plant on a more woody or "tree" like stalk.

Yes, it was very tall and treelike. It had a very sturdy stalk and it's odor was very much stronger than the tomato plants that we are familiar with. My son grew it from seed in the greenhouse and brought it home over winter vacation.

Isn't it cool? I may just have to get one next spring. I think it's too late this year but I'm still going to try the other Giant tomato tree I've seen in ads just for fun Tomato tree Icon_lol
