Community Garden - Azure Standard in Dufur, Oregon
While looking up some information on remineralizing the soil, I came across a blog on the Azure Standard site about a community garden they maintain at their offices in Dufur, Oregon. Included in the article is this quote:
The community garden is in it’s fourth season this spring. The original inspiration for the raised bed garden was from the book “Square Foot Gardening” by Mel Bartholomew (BK143). We have five 4-foot by 4-foot boxes that are 11 inches deep. The original soil mixture was 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 organic compost, and 1/3 vermiculite. This soil mix has worked very well for us; it holds water well, requiring water only once per day, even in the hottest weather. Each season the soil level drops a few inches, and Azure team members mix in more organic compost to top it off and provide nutrients for the plants.

OhioGardener, thanks for the link. wealth of gardening information that I will share with my class of beginning raised bed gardeners. As far as remineralizing the soil, I leave you, no pun intended with this link to a Rutgers University pdf. An analysis of municipal tree leaves. If leaves are a major ingredient in your composting than all should be there when added as a soil amendment. When in doubt and for peace of mind, soil test.
