Bird baths with solar powered pump
Does anyone have a bird bath with a solar powered pump? I want to add one now that the back yard is full sun. TY
Re: Bird baths with solar powered pump
So, no takers on this question? I am determined to give the birds a running bird bath this year. I'll post on my final selection.

That is a great idea! I have a few friends who are into solar bigtime, I will ask around and see what they think. I have a solar powered fence working off of a deep cycle battery, so a low powered pump might work if done right. It might not be Niagara Falls though.
I can hear it now on a warm summer night, the water drops creating the relaxing sounds.

Rock, thank you. Though water drops might be nice, I was thinking more for the birds' comfort and fun when it hits 110*F.
Re: Bird baths with solar powered pump
Sanderson, I tried a solar powered bird bath about 10 years ago but it failed within a few months. The solar panel was built-in so I ended up with a bird bath minus the fountain.
Floating solar pumps are now available, cost about $15, and can be placed in a bird bath of your choice so long as the water is deep enough to meet the pump's requirements. I've not tried one so cannot say whether or not it works any better than what I had before.

Re: Bird baths with solar powered pump
Thanks for your input. I'm looking towards the style where the solar panel is separate. I was thinking a bird bath bowl set on top of a 5-gallon food grade bucket as a large reservoir. I would black out the bucket to reduce algae growth. I'm pretty good at Jerry-rigging things once I find the parts. The motor needs to be able to operate at low flow, etc.
Re: Bird baths with solar powered pump
This sounds similar to my hopes to create an outdoor watercress growing system - bowl/smaller bucket on a 5-gallon bucket reservoir, with a solar-powered pump to cycle the water over the roots. I've picked up all the parts for an indoor, electric/non-solar version to see if the base concept works. ...Except for a round-tuit - I still need one of those. I look forward to seeing what set-up you use.

Re: Bird baths with solar powered pump
I finally made up my mind today about which solar powered pump and style of bird bath to buy. How many years have I been thinking about it? They arrive Sunday and Monday!

Late Sunday charging in the even sun. It was flowing withing 90 minutes or less.
Monday in it's general area. Needs leveling and a tube to auto fill on watering days. The solar panel in on the top plate of the lattice fence.

Very pretty - I'm sure the birdies will appreciate it, too!
