Re: 2018/2019 SFG in Brooks, GA
Yes, I started these tomatoes and probably another 16 in addition to these that are already planted. I usually plant a lot more seeds than I need so I have back ups if anything goes wrong. A few of the better varieties are planted in pots and my daughter takes the rest to her school and gives them to the STEP teacher to use in their gardens.sanderson wrote:Impressive as usual. Did you start those tomatoes?

Is it time to sow the Pinkeye Purplehull Peas? Night temps are around +50*F.
Re: 2018/2019 SFG in Brooks, GA
I think it still might be a little early. I looked at your temperatures and your night time temps are a little colder than mine. You have 6 nights in the next ten days that are under 50*F and only one day over 80*F. The following article says soil temp should be over 60*F. See following.sanderson wrote:Is it time to sow the Pinkeye Purplehull Peas? Night temps are around +50*F.

Planting time. Sow Southern peas 4 weeks after the last average frost date in spring when the soil has warmed to at least 60°F. Southern peas prefer warm to hot weather, with air temperatures between 70° and 95°F–most days exceeding 85°F.
I never plant my southern peas this early. Usually after my garlic, potatoes and shell peas are finished producing. That is sometime in late April to early June for me.

Just starting to harvest Fava Beans.
My first Garlic. Harvested a bit early because I could not tell exactly how big it was. The leaves are just starting to turn brown. I was worried that they were turning brown way too early. Usually do not start to harvest garlic until the end of May or beginning of June.

WOW! That's amazing. My peas are taking off, but they're still weeks behind yours.

Strike bush peas, huh? How do they taste? Love how compact they are....
Re: 2018/2019 SFG in Brooks, GA
I enjoyed the winter Strike peas. I'm going to have to buy some more seeds for this fall.
Re: 2018/2019 SFG in Brooks, GA
AM - They taste great to me but I do not have a very discernible palate. I tasted some Alaska peas today and the strike peas were much sweeter to my taste.
Sanderson - I tend to buy large quantities of seeds for veggies that I love. I purchased 1/2 pound from Johnny's this winter. So that should also last me thru this fall.
Thanks all for the compliments. I have been harvesting that same amount of peas and fava beans every other day.

It is hot in Hotlanta and no rain in sight. It usually does not get this kind of heat and humidity until the 4th of July. The next 3 days will be 95 and above. The average temp for this period is 82*F. Very very muggie.

It is too hot and humid to work outside in the middle of the day now so I will upload some pictures taken over the last couple weeks.
Garlic harvested - 48 cloves mostly all fairly good size.
Okra planted where the garlic was harvested.
White Kohlrabi harvested - still waiting on the purple
Carrots harvested - planted peppers, Stevia, and celery in the bed
Broccoli harvested - planted Partenon Zuc and White Scallop Squash in bed
All of the peas have been harvested and frozen in food saver bags. Total of 16 cups
The only spring veggies not harvested yet are potatoes and purple kohlrabi. Potatoes are significantly smaller than in past years I think due to too much shade where they were planted.
A few hot weather things planted and doing well so far.
Corn
Tomatoes - some are starting to ripen and will be ready in a few days.
My favorite Rattlesnake beans. About 6 feet tall now.
Partenon Zuc
Baby Persian Cucumber
Fava Beans have all been harvested and frozen in food saver bags. Total of 15 cups. Still waiting on my Pinkeye Purple Hull peas, cucumbers, tromboncino squash and baby watermelon to germinate.

Partenon Zucchini are starting to be ready to be harvested. They are parthenocarpic so I do not have to wait for a male and female to bloom at the same time. Also, I have some under tulle so the squash vine borers can't get them.
The Rattlesnake beans have reached the top of the 8 foot trellis and will be tangling up at the top of the trellis very soon.
My pinkeye purple hull peas just did not germinate this year even though I tested them before planting. I have a more recent batch of seeds that I will replant to see if they will germinate.

Re: 2018/2019 SFG in Brooks, GA
Finally got my corn fertilized and did the Florida weave in both directions to keep the corn from blowing over in a thunderstorm. In one bed I used bamboo sticks in one direction to help stabilize the stalks and in the other two beds I just used twine in a Florida Weave in both directions. I have a 3x8 bed for each of the following varieties of corn - Early Sunglow, Peaches & Cream, Silver Queen.
