Looks like I am going to get 16 Canada Crookneck squash this year. The largest is on the plant that was started indoors and grew in the living room before transplanting outside. It is 18 inches long but not yet ready to harvest.

That's Wonderful news! Here's hoping that they all make it to maturity.

How many plants in total?

Total of eight plants. Some produced one squash, some two and some three.

So it's six o'clock in the morning and you get up to add Italian Seasoning to the Marinara Sauce that has been cooking for seven hours in a crockpot. The seasoning needs to be added in the final hour of cooking on high. But to your dismay the jar of Italian Seasoning is empty. What to do? Answer: make your own seasoning.  I used mostly herbs that were dried previously from various herb plants grown in our Square Foot Garden. The aroma is amazing.

After watching the SFG Foundation live event, I followed some if the advice and topped my tomato plants. I am hoping this will speed up the maturing of the green tomatoes.

Our veggie garden has produced well this year. Still getting cucumbers, beans and delicious everbearing raspberries on a daily basis.  But there is so much  more yet to be harvested including parsnips, basil, beans, carrots, lettuce, kale, onions, leeks, peppers, tomatoes, squash, eggplant and maybe a late crop of peas. Cannot wait to see how the parsnips work out ... First time growing them.Fourth Year SFG in Canada - Page 21 Img_2223

Nice, TD!  Things are petering out here, peppers are still going strong and eggplant is but showing down.  Fall lettuces are good, radishes got eaten by the green worms, a few will make it! Looks like you are having a great year!

I know I am being repetitive but the bountiful harvest continues today with tomatoes, beans (golden wax, blauhilde purple, rattlesnake) and raspberries. We shared with a neighbour who is a single mom.

Time to do some compost sifting from the stuff that has been cooking in the plastic SoilSaver bin. Got a full wheelbarrow of nice compost. There is is still more to sift. The bigger pieces were thrown into the 3x3x3 bin along with some grass clippings and shredded leaves (saved from last Fall).Fourth Year SFG in Canada - Page 21 Img_2228

Nice!  Blauhilde is my fave!  What variety of wax are you growing?  And where are you getting seed?  It’s nice to share, especially when you know they appreciate the gift!

The wax beans are golden wax beans from Baker Creek.

The JBs prefer the roses and rasberries in our garden. They did not touch either the bush beans or the pole beans.

I put in trap plants for the JB's to keep them away from the vegetable gardens - I plant rows of Zinnias away from the gardens, and they go to those first.  Then I try to go out early each evening and knock the JB's off the flowers into a container of soapy water. Fortunately, they only last about 2 weeks here.

This year, though, we were gone for a month over the time they visited us, and they totally decimated the Zinnia plants.

TD, I used to have that problem until a friend showed me what I was doing wrong. I always bought the white & yellow onion sets each spring and planted them in early spring. But, the would always send up flower/seed stalks in June/July which I had to cut off as soon as I saw them. But, they never went on to produce large onion bulbs.

A friend told me the problem was that the onion sets you buy have been kept in refrigerated warehouses until spring when they ship them to retailers to sell. So, when I planted them and they sprouted they thought it was their second year (onions are biennial plants), it was their time to go to seed.  Instead, he said, start onion seeds indoors in January and transplant them to the garden in early April (for my Zone 5) so that it is their first year and all they do is grow. Sure enough, lots of nice large onions for the winter storage. I've done this for three years, and had 3 years of success.

Another benefit of doing this, that he didn't mention, is that a package of onion seeds  costs less than $3.00 for over 300 seeds, compared to $4.00 for less than 100 onion sets that local farm store.

Of course, you must have a very loose, rich soil for onions to grow and expand in.
