I'm just wondering if anyone out there uses those things, the red plastic trays that go around the stem of the tomato plant, and do you feel they make a difference, are they worth it? I did a search here, but didn't find anything. Maybe I'm not calling them by the right name. This is what I mean.

It may work but when I see things like that I can only say to myself, "Now there is a solution looking for a problem to solve".  Very Happy

darn funny

It would certainly be a fun experiment. HG, if you try one, please be sure to let us know if it does all it claims.

I've seen where some commercial growers use red plastic mulch. They seem to feel that it helps... ???

Yes, I've heard that too. My girlfriend picked up some of the red trays at a tag sale, and she gave them to me, because she doesn't have a garden. I'm going to see if I can get them around my tomatoes without damaging them. They're on the outside rows of the SFG, and there's a trellis next to them, so I may not be able to do it, but I'll see how it goes.

Post  hammock gal 7/10/2017, 5:25 pm

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to this, but I had my cousin here visiting from Florida. She left yesterday, so I'm back to the garden. I'm afraid that the red trays will have to wait until next year, because the tomato stems are too big to slide through the slot without damaging them, and the whole SFG is too much of a jungle to be able to maneuver them around without banging into something or other and probably causing more damage than they are worth. But in case you'd like to see what they look like, here are some pics. And here's a little info. http://www.gardenharvestsupply.com/productcart/pc/Gardeneer-Red-Tomato-Tray-3-Pack-p3133.htm

And the pics...Oh, and just a side note...I got a three pack of cherry tomato plants, and only had room for one of them in the SFG, so I put the other two in a big pot. The ones in the pot look healthy and have flowers and some tiny tomatoes on them, but the one in the SFG is a monster! I guess Mel's Mix is working its magic. cheers
